Not only does nothing seem to happen in soccer (other than one or two goals), the entire thing is full of cheaters. People tackle people, and people who aren't being tackled dive for the ground just in case they can get the nearest opposing team member kicked out.

CBC is actually a fairly decent channel to watch it on. I'm watching a rerun of Italy Paraguay on CBC right now.

I don't see why you would say it's not exciting. Argentina vs. Uruguay, despite not scoring anything, was pretty fun to watch.

Tackling isn't cheating as far as I was aware, either. And they're diving into the ground to try to knock the ball off course.

Dude, 'Mericans totally lost 'Nam.
We got our asses kicked.

And this is there way of getting back at them. "We can achieve victory by tying as well! Ne-ner-ne-ner-ne-ner!"

Admittedly the Viet Ming didn't just win by not losing but soccer isn't a metaphor for everything.

Now, I played soccer for 10+ years, but I'll be completely truthful. Professional soccer is not exciting to watch. I always want to be excited for the world cup, but can never for the life of me get into it.

As opposed to what sport, exactly? :P
Admittedly, there aren't that many good teams, especially not national ones where all the stars are spread thin. Brazil is always a joy to watch though, and Spanish "la Liga" is mostly fun as well. Of course, much of the excitement comes from having a favourite team.

The legal name of the sport is "Association Football"

"Soccer" comes from the word assocation.
Ah, I see. Thanks!

You watch too much Italian matches. :D

That's because 'Nam was, if I remember correctly, the only true loss for the Americans.
Or at least the first.
1812 was similar to the OP scenario.
Both sides declared victory, but it was really a tie.

I could correct you, but I won't.

We are BAD at football!

Actually, not really. You're probably not serious, but a lot of people think that way ;) I'd put USA as the 11th most likely candidate to win the cup, judging from the pre-World Cup matches, and player's performance in their clubs. But the World Cup shows that players who do great for their clubs might not do so well in an international team, lol.

I don't watch the WC for the final score.

I watch it to see two dudes with almost no padding collide at full speed, bones, knees, elbows and all.

And on a serious note, soccer may not be the most exciting sport to watch (from an American perspective), but I think moment to moment, there is a lot of skill mastery and talent to appreciate watching. I like how American Football fans talk shit about soccer as though carrying the ball is the same thing as guiding it and moving it around with your feet. Soccer is more like a football team made up entirely of quarterbacks that don't use their hands.

Football is to American Football what modern infantry is to line infantry. Americans just can't recognise finesse even if it subtly bites them in the ass.

Taking dives is half the fun of playing soccer! Making a light nudge look like a shoulder tackle from the receiving end... It's not cheating, it's an art.

Hockey. I don't care if I'm playing into the stereotype. Hockey is awesome.

At least us Americans don't stereotype everyone like all of the foreigners. Humans are just silly.

Any Rugby fans? To this silly American, it seems like the hybrid child of soccer and football. Unfortunately I do not know the rules, but I've seem a couple games out of the US.

And Americans don't stereotype. That's what Terrorists do.

That's so stupid. There's a reason most of the world calls it football. It is because a ball is hit with the feet.
