You lose really because we invented the game.

Lol I showed that picture to my friend and his response was

"well it's not just football... They did the same thing with Vietnam"

Made me giggle. :P

That's because 'Nam was, if I remember correctly, the only true loss for the Americans.
Or at least the first.
1812 was similar to the OP scenario.
Both sides declared victory, but it was really a tie.

No. Or yea, but almost everybody else are worse. And then there's Germany/Spain/Italy and the like which are on about the level of badness. Only Brazil and some years Argentina qualify as good football teams.

I'm curious, is football gaining any foothold in USA? Ie, how many people are actually aware that you guys have a team in the World Cup, or that there is a World Cup going on?

It seems like most people are aware there is a world cup going on, but little more about it.  I heard the commentators talking about the world cup during a baseball game on ESPN, though that could be chalked up to a network promotion.  Of course, they didn't know who was in group C besides the US and England :P

I've followed soccer since I was a kid.  It helps having a father who is a soccer coach.

Why is it called "soccer", anyway? What does it mean?

A lot more than you'd think, since it was against England. There is history there, and it's why the Average American cares. We are much more interested in the gold medal for synchronized swimming as a whole than the World Cup, even though the world cup is more prestigious elsewhere. Our Soccer stars don't earn very much compared to other sports, because they don't draw the crowds.

I disagree. Holding your own can be significantly more than a tie. When we held our own in 1812, we doomed the Native American "buffer nation" to a stillbirth. How would the world look now if The United States of America did not stretch from "Sea to Shining Sea".

It sure would help the World Cup's popularity in America if I could find it on any channel. Seriously, I could only find it on a Canadian station!

ABC has the rights to it, last I checked.

We got the England/USA match at least.

Yeah, it's on ABC (the big matches, like US vs England and Germany vs. Socceroos) and ESPN.

I've been following the Cup fairly closely because I played soccer into high school.

Also, the New York Post is conservative garbage :D

Now, I played soccer for 10+ years, but I'll be completely truthful. Professional soccer is not exciting to watch. I always want to be excited for the world cup, but can never for the life of me get into it.

The world would look...slightly less American? Maybe I don't understand the question.

The legal name of the sport is "Association Football"

"Soccer" comes from the word assocation.
