Why are people so anti-gay? (not religous reasons)
« on: June 14, 2010, 01:21:49 am »

If this becomes in any way a flame war, I shall lock the thread.

I mean, really. I was having a chat with a friend online. I brought up that you could be put to death for being gay in 7 countries...let me just post the log:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(I removed their username)

Why are people like this?
Do people have any rational reason for hobophobia?
It just seems..majorly messed up and prejudiced to me.
I get people who are religous and have religous reasons for..strongly disliking it. But even then, going out on a public chatboard and going as far as to saying that it's a crime against nature, and that it's punishable by death at your house?

Every single discussion I've seen surrounding it decides that there is no rational reason for disliking it; it's always religious.

Seriously, the "it's unnatural" can be quickly refuted by looking at nature.
There are animals that have homosexual sex.

There are animals that change their gender at will as well.

Yeah, it's not unnatural, it's because it's different to the social norms and since sexuality isn't really a very open topic anywhere (not throughout society anyway, and not where it matters) people won't have a reason, but they won't like and will try and make a reason and you get, well... that chat log.

So it's a minority discrimination thing if it's not religious? That sounds approximately correct to me.

It's either religion, people thinking "it's just weird," or both. I doubt homophobes give a crap about what nature does or doesn't do.

Minority discrimination, yes. It's intolerance for a way of life not one's own.

It's how we role, unfortunately.

For what it's worth, he's wrong anyway; the SCOTUS shot anti-sodomy laws down in general, I believe.

Religion aside, it's worth noting that sexuality and family (and one's ideas of social relationships in general) are pretty important to a person's worldview. If a person grows up to believe, say, that heterosexuality is the only sexuality, that person may indeed lash out when that accepted fact gets questioned, in order to protect their own values and worldview from being threatened.

It's unfortunately rather natural; people live their lives and think their thoughts according to a certain idea they have about how the world works, and some people are better at adapting to new information/ideas than others, some reacting so badly as to adopt ideas like "homosexuality is a crime against nature" as a defense mechanism. Reaching these people on the level of rational discussion is not always very easy, because the problem they have with it isn't logical to begin with; it's personal.

Well homophobia the word itself is a political word, I wouldn't use it since it means just about anything depending on the situation.

I honestly do not understand extreme levels of hate. Even in my darkest hours where loathing leaks out of every pour I havn't found it in my heart to absolutely hate anyone or even a group of people.

Ultimately I don't understand any form of hatred and I honestly wonder if that means something is wrong with me.

I really don't understand it either. I really don't see why people should hate minorities, or anyone for that mater, especially if they haven't even done anything to affect/harm them in anny way.

Yeah man, some hobos have gone loopy from living out in the streets for so long and might rob or otherwise harm you.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

Those countries where its illegal are ones where they take Islamic Law and values very seriously. It can only be religiously motivated.

But to be fair, if I went home one day and my wife was being homosexual, I might

Well, I would watch, probably.

I read somewhere once a long time ago that humans are naturally bisexual.
It's simply societal stuff and the way we grow mentally that determine our sexual preference.

I dunno, I've never found the whole "zomg lesbians so hawt" thing attractive at all. The whole thing seems kind of dumb to me, from a straight guy POV.
