Just registered at KGS under the name Argmbarger.

Never played Go before in my life; finished the interactive tutorial, tried a few Goproblems for fun (Some of those problems seem pretty sketchy; I breezed my way through some so-called "6th dan" puzzles I tried for kicks. Either the problems are poorly rated for difficulty, or I'm the world's most natural Go prodigy, and the latter explanation is utter bull. In comparison, some middle kyu problems kicked me in the face pretty hard and I couldn't solve them at all, so there you go.)

Anyway I'll add the names from earlier in the thread... hope to play one of you soon.

Those are actually where I got the problems; though like I said I must have just found a few bad ones. I've been doing a lot more and 99% of 'em are nice and challenging.

I especially like the time trial mode.

ooooo Yeah sometimes the ratings are off if they are new, no one has tried them yet so they aren't given a rank. Or maybe all the people that tried them have failed at them. That would make them 6 dan.

a harrr neco

i found a go club hidden within my university maths dept. Its full of beardy guy maths Drs and postgrads. I turned up late and played 3 9x9 games won two lost one. But the two i won i was given a healthy handicap and my opponent was playing two games at once. Most of the guys in the club are about 10kyu better than me by my estimate but it should be a good learning ground.

I prefer playing in a bar to online, as KGS forces you to play quickly, and for me strategy is about contemplation

I used to play go quite a bit, but its been quite a while.  :)

Although once per year me and this other guy have a game of drunken speed go.  Its a ton of fun.

yeah the ranking is really oddly fast i got 16 kyu in 2 games from 21, both were against equally ranked players.

the second game was rather odd in how fast he resigned as i cannot figure myself having that much of a lead looking at it, do you guys see anything?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

im black btw

You have a big lead.  :)  White has a strong position in the upper right, but you could still tear that apart a bit and you already own two huge chunks.

Edit:  Hrm.  I should get back into go.  Is there a DF room or something on KGS? :)

I play PBEM / long turn games on these two servers. I never get the time to go on KGS and i dont really like the high
speed of the game. My user is De5me7 on Richards  PBEM sever, and DukeofChutney on Dragon look me up if you want
to play me, im about 20kyu.

Ditto.  My early game is my worst bit.  But if it was me I'd probably put a stone right in the middle as black, just to reinforce everything.

Edit:  Although not now that he has invaded.

I thought that too, but that just seems to leave too much room for invasion. I think playing around the edge in threatening areas that white has to respond to and then building off the results of that would be a better move. Of course I have no idea how to do that  :-\

Well, if you wanted to attack, then R13 looks pretty sweet to me.  He'll manage to get the corner but you'll make a lot of strength facing the middle that you could probably use later and carve a chunk into his side.

I'd almost say K18 would be fun too, but I think its a little to early to start going for small annoying moves like that.  :)

Hi,

as a rule of politeness, the first move should be played around the Q16 corner. Of course the goban it's symmetrical and play first on Q16, Q4, D16 or D4 it's the same thing, but playing on the opponent side (around Q16) it's a courtesy move, so, your opponent can see the move better. :P

It seems silly but in Go it's all about politeness. ¿How many times you seen, in an online CHESS game, an opponent saying "thankyou" after a lose?"

About strategic hints.... I'm about 6k on KGS, so, I can't tell you too much. Maybe I have played the 7th move on C14 (instead C13) to add more pressure to the opponent. And I have played last move (25) in F4 (instead of E3) to confine white to the side and build a big moyo on center/left of the board at the same time.

Regards
