I've been meaning to play more, but I got involved in starcraft 2. I might be on in a few hours if anybody wants to play then.

Heh. Good to see some posts in this thread again. I haven't played much for a while, though somehow my rank has gone up. Woo 11kyu.

im still there, i recently moved to 19k before being knocked back down again (personally i think the ranking system slightly over rates me and possibly players in the 20something bracket in general).

what opening do u guys use? most ppl on KGS that ive played seem to open with 'chinese opening' 4x4,4x4 and then the mid point between them, they then go for mayo or attack.

im currently doing a 4x4 then either a 3x3 or a 3x4 then either mayo or shimari, then kakari

also when is it a good idea to make a small move or a big move - what i mean is i often get drawn into fights about the 8th move of the game (sometimes earlier) is it a good idea to keep building mayo/ putting down shiimari rather than playing small moves?

I usually go 4x4 and then 4x4 or 4x3, a 3x3 is a little too tight to the corner IMO. After that, it depends on what the other player does, I usually avoid playing on the side I control, instead pushing up on the third line along one of the split sides if I played both 4x4s, or else reinforce the 3x4 point I played earlier.

Regarding early battles, your best bet is to play a stone or two and make whatever is threatened solid, and as soon as they play a move you don't need to immediately respond to, play elsewhere on the board that forces a response. At this stage of the game, getting influence over a large area is more important than winning a local battle.

OJ has the right idea. 4,4 and 3,4 -> 5,3 are the best standard opening moves. Nobody does 3,3.

For the early fights, consider which move has more overall point value. Most of the time, playing a move to take control of the board will trump a senseless early fight. Are you sure you're running into early fights, and not openings? Turn 8 is generally when start josekis coming into play.

yeh theyre fights, most of the players i play like to capture stones, and so once the first 6 to 8 stones are down i get attacked somewheres

http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/Go/Go.php?2929&html

exhibit A, this is a pbem game im currently playing, You will see a some what small minded fight going on in the bottom left. We are each chasing other around trying to kill but not really achieving anything. Each turn i want to break off and build some mayo but find my self adding an extra stone for security or harassment instead.

http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/Go/Go.php?2907&html

exhibit b another pbem game. Here there was a wall building exersize and then i chucked in an invader and cilmbed out of the corner. im gonna cut and try and kill one of his groups asap, but perhaps i should be securing some eyes instead.

Game A, move 13. I'm not sure that's an opening. I could be wrong, since I haven't looked at openings in a bajillion years, but I'm pretty sure the standard opening move was R6, not N4.

In any case,
Code: [Select]
13 N4 14 L4
15 L5 16 M4
was really, really, really aggressive. Especially the L5 followup. Something like R6 around move 17, and then moving on to the rest of the board would be more common. Let him spend precious early game turns dealing with your two stones (N4, L5). You can spend that time expanding (N17 maybe?). If he ignores those two, you can always go back during the midgame and mess around with his weakened structure.

In game B, you need to play S19 right away. That's the life/death spot for your entire corner + extensions. You're not gonna get any eyes out in his top-left/mid territory unless he majorly messes up. Also, L12 looks fun, but only after your group survival is guaranteed.

What about k17? Make a base cutting their groups in half. If they go there they would be putting your stone in danger and expending their own territory.

EDIT: Or K16, that works too  :P

best win yet possibly

this guy kicked me out of each of the corners but when he tried to invade my space a lot of two/one point jumps and better influence/structure saved me ass.

The way I see it, if you made a wrong move, he still could of won. What would you next move of been?
