I just a lost a game of Go and was slightly confused as to the way or how much i lost it by. I was under the impression that if both sides built a wall (im white wall in bottom half) and it was solid the stones on the other side would be assumed to be dead both sides would then pass and the game would be over. I started passing when i realised i couldnt usefully break my oponents wall. I passed a few times and he just started invading. I thought these stones would count as dead and so didnt react until he almost built two eyes.

i then tried to mitigate the damage a bit. At the end of the game i lost, i checked the score estimate and it gave me the territory in the top right corner despite these just being lone stones.

i thought i played an ok game up until the end, i even got him in a ladder.

based on these screens can anyone give me some advice? How does the game end, when are stones considered dead? Ive seen this stuff in tutorials but it didnt appear to hold true in this game

In the first screen shot he was alive a long time ago, too many ways to get 2 eyes.

A group is considered dead when there is no way to capture it, this does not include seki (when the first person to move loses their group, no points for anyone). The only way to tell if a group is dead is thinking ahead or experience.

What I don't get is how black has so many more stones then you are the end of the game. A good way to defend would probably be around G2. M17 would also save you some points.

The reason for the territory in the top right is just an estimate if the game were to continue.

The game ends if both players pass because there aren't any more moves that can gain them points. Usually players also fill up all the points that don't gain or lose them any points too. Just for convenience in counting by hand. With the computer doing the counting, you can get away with leaving these dame (da-mey) points open before stopping.

The three loose stones aren't really living or dead for certain yet, they need to be fought over to see which it's going to be.

I just had an opponent ragequit in the most annoying way: He went afk. Luckily, it was an unranked game, so I just resigned after awhile.

Time limit? Just wait it out and give him the loss. I'm sure you can open up separate games.

I've been slightly interested in Go for a while, but no one I see on a regular basis ever plays board games.  I guess I should try out some of these links for online stuff.

I'm not sure there actually is a room.

Also, at De5me7, might I suggest you go to the english room and ask around for a teaching game or two? It's the fastest way to learn, and there are often some very good players willing to help. Also, there are links to tutorials on the main page (gokgs.com) if you can't get a teaching game. Finally, there's a filter that prevents spectators speaking to you during the game; they can see your posts, you can't see theirs until the end. That said, if you happen to be online anytime I am (I live in Perth, Australia), give me a buzz on KGS, and I can give you a teaching game or two.

No, teaching games are not the fastest way to learn. Do the Playgo tutorial that is on the OP and then go to http://goproblems.com/ and click on the problem link and search for 30 kyu problems and check off the order>easiest, then do every problem starting form the easiest Best way to learn imho.

Eh, a skilled teacher can do anything the tutorial does, and provide constant commentary along the way. Either way though, comes down to personal preference.

But it takes time to set up each problem, and no human has as many problems and the variety of goproblems.com.

I'd like to play, I'm very much a beginner, though I played in the past I didn't really progress at all.  I registered on KGS as TimA.

ive had one lesson, it was very useful, and also ive played through a couple of tutorials

im not 1005 convinced by interactive tutorials/life and death puzzels atm. My problem is, i dont understand why white moves where it does in response to black within the tutorials, or why i get a fail message in some situations. Im sure there are reasons for these things but the tutorials dont say what they are. It looks to me as if white plays in manner that will make the life and death puzzel work rather than necessarily a smart way for white to play. Im probably wrong on this but i cant tell why. I often solve problems through trial and error rather than logic. Sometimes once solved i can work back through them and see the logic, sometimes not.

also the room i created was deleted upon me logging off. I believe we half to ask for a perment room.

Id like to see a bay12room, but im not volunteering to set it up.
