Please add this link to the original post. It's a great interactive tutorial for learning GO

Thanks a ton!

Yeah, I haven't played for a few years, since things got busier, but I used to play slow games on DGS.  I picked it up in grad school and never got that good.  I was around the point where books for beginners were mostly pointless and books for intermediates were mostly waaaay over my head, which was around 11k on the server if I remember.

Awesome, it warms my heart to see go players here, the internet is truly a wonderful place.  Lets play a game!

The server I use is at gokgs.com, its free and java-based.  My name there is also JamPet, more than happy to do teaching games, lessons, and even games.  My first teacher and I have been teaching go to all sorts of people for several years now, so a few internet lessons are a piece of cake.  Sign up, put me on your friends list there and ask me for a game, I'll be happy to oblige.

Wondering if there's a way to get some b12 Go games going. Isn't there a free internet client?

Having consulted the rules for this sort of thing on KGS, it seems like they'll set up a Bay12Games social room if we can basically assure them that enough people will use it that it wouldn't be a waste of their time.  The rooms in KGS are nice, they have group chat and you can have as many games going as you have players.  So if you're interested send me a message either on this site or through KGS and I'll present ourselves to one of their mods when we have a batch of people.

I've never learned go and was reading that nice guide and got to this part and was curious

If that was the entire board then the game should be considered finished, because each side can easily surround the other if they try to play in their territory.  But...wouldn't it be prudent to continue?  White loses territory for each piece it has to leave in its own territory should black continue to invade.  Or did they not explain that very well?

Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.

Unless Black can somehow live in White's territory, the game would be over. Otherwise any pieces that are guaranteed not to live are captured by the other player.

From what little I know, white would have to ignore black for a turn or two for black to have any chance at all of that.

That's correct, and white may keep ignoring black till as long as he wants and then just take black's pieces when it's white's turn again.

Just registered with KGS. I don't know how many people we could get to participate but it might be worth a shot.

Maybe you could change the thread title? Turn this into an all-purpose Go thread or something?

I think I can tell why it shouldn't matter because white can do the same thing back to black and black will have lower territories afterwards than white anyways.

Edit: That and they explain lost pieces = less points a bit later in the tutorial.  Why they didn't mention that in the game ending conditions the first time is beyond me.

The easiest way to think of it is every stone captured can be used by the opponent to fill in a space. Hence, you can end up with negative territory if you're not careful.
