Does Toady play Go?
« on: June 13, 2010, 08:54:14 pm »

I was wandering around the internet the other day and found the Dwarf Fort user group on last.fm.  "Cool!" thought I, even though there isn't much on the page, its still sweet to see that we have our little tentacles squirming around in various places.  Then I looked at the user picture.

It is a dude, with a thoughtful look on his face, sitting in front of a game board...

A GO board!

Toady are you reading this?  Do you play Go?  Awesome!  Here I am sitting around thinking I'm the only person I know who has ever even heard of the thing, the number one game designer knows it too!  I wonder if a lot of people who play DF also play Go?  So sound off if you do!  We might could even get a little room going on the Kiseido server, eh?

And for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, go on over to the American Go Association's http://usgo.org/for some context.

And Hemmingjay's link to the go basics interractive crash course on the internet (thanks, Hemmingjay!).

I've played Go a few times, I really good board game. Takes more strategy then chess and can end up looking really cool. I was never very good at it though.

I sorta do, though I'm sorta a newbie at it. It seems less cramped then chess (as in faster paced) and equally intense, but I dont know alot of people willing to play it with me.

Hm.  I tried to play Go once, after an extremely brief rundown of the rules and goal, which taught me nothing.

My opponent was my anime club prez, and he then proceeded to steamroll me.  After that he played someone else, and only then did I learn you could take handicaps.

Never again.

Heh, I just bought a board last thursday. I love the game, but I'm not very good. Probably the best opponent I regularly play is a 13 kyu, and I'm usually about 10 stones down when we call it :(

I play Go.  I can steamroll anyone who's only been playing a few weeks, but I get steamrolled by anyone who's good enough to know their rank.  I played a lot of it on my last roadtrip, in pretty much every Taco Bell we stopped in.

Wondering if there's a way to get some b12 Go games going. Isn't there a free internet client?

If there is I might try it. Sounds fun.

Several, (I have gnugo installed) which can be used through KGS (Kiseido Go Server). It's free, and you can create rooms there.

I registered just so I could say that I would like to join in on these games if they ever start up.

I tried to learn Go but I still don't understand it for the most part.

Though to me Go seems like the sort of game that is more interesting while you don't know it very well. I've seen how masterful games go.

Yahoo! Games also has a java-based Go.  If you want to play with family members or something, it's a great way to get them into it without them needing to install software.
