Improving attributes, cutting down on the fat
« on: June 13, 2010, 10:50:14 am »

The rules for how dwarves gain (and now lose) physical attributes have changed, and the number of attributes has greatly increased.  Dwarves can now be skinny or fat; I've read that, unless special measures are taken, they will tend to become absurdly obese.  I cannot find any advice in the wiki on:
1) What the physical and mental attributes do.
2) How to improve them and prevent them from degrading, and
3) How to keep dwarves from getting fat.

What've you found out about all this so far?

strength- hauling ability?
agility- speed
toughness- ability to survive in combat?
disease resistance- slower infections
endurance- time for them to get "tired"
recuperation- healing speed.

as for the mental attributes, no clue whatsoever.

I also wonder, is it possible to "train" the attributes, for example a dwarf who is described as "very weak" and "very flimsy", if he does a lot of work, will he become tough and such?

Yes, you can train your dwarve's PHYSICAL abilities through rigorous training from the military.

Bootcamp dwarves, go!

But military will only train endurance, strength, and agility, as far as I know, and affect their appearance of being from obese to incredibly muscular.

Mental attritubes, currently, doesn't really affect anything as far as anybody has discovered.

Wait, it's easy for dwavres to get fat? Because as far as I can tell, almost everything a dwarf can do burns stored energy.

Picture a dwarf, warrior, mechanic, or some other incredibly useful profession. Now picture him dead. That's what infections do.

All that alcohol has to go somewhere.

Is putting every dwarf I get through a basic training of sorts recommended? I noticed in the "Known Issues" that enlisted dwarves never pick up civvie jobs again. However, there is no wasted time allowed in my fort! Anyone with No Job will have a damn job made for them, usually in the form of dumping stone or building crap.

You could also try making a Gym: A room full of screw pumps, to train toughness, and presumably cut down on fat.

It's a shame simple civ jobs don't seem to affect physical attributes anymore.  I remember a while ago I had a miner from embark who was "very flimsy"

years of digging later she was still flimsy

Fat is a good thing. It lets you live longer, I think. (You have to generally destroy the fat before the muscle.)

on the fat I think it's just a natural dwarf thing. Like how every dwarf has the "needs alcohol to get through the day trait", it's just how they are.

To tell the truth, the physical traits have completely no affect on regular jobs (except for agility) unless they are going into combat.

So unless you wanna bootstrap your dwarves into a man-at-arms militia, then you don't really have to put them into training.
Also, if you're using the newest version 0.31.06, your dwarves should be happy to be relieved from duty.
