Why is everything so... boring?
« on: June 13, 2010, 09:57:36 am »

So I just got into the game after the long learning curve (playing on 40d) and it was really fun at first, but after 2 in game years I'm kind of... bored.

I have a population of 45, and although quite a few of my dwarves are throwing tantrums, I don't really know what to do now. I have plenty of beds, a huge food supply, and although my booze supply is running low, nothing interesting seems to be happening.

I guess I'm kind of just waiting for the shit to hit the fan or something since I don't know what else to do.

This is the ideal moment for a megaproject.

My standard response is to abandon the fort, then start a new one with more ridiculous engineering projects like waterfalls flowing through all the rooms.

Or focus on actually caring for your dwarves - give them pleasantly-made rooms, well-crafted metal furniture... build up the military, produce assloads of trade goods... there's lots of things to distract yourself.

Or a megaproject.

If you genned a world with no goblins, that might be a reason.

If you haven't dug into the caverns, that is definitely a reason.

Between the two of those you should be occupied.  If you really have nothing going on, try Kidiri's suggestion.

I suggest you make the transition to 2010.

45 population is already hella boring if you're not doing it on purpose for some mega project/ridiculous plan. I'm guessing your fort hasn't amassed much wealth either, meaning invaders are going to be a bit rare.  Start producing trade goods and building military to get some action going, also lay cage traps all around the area and start taming yourself some wild life, start digging down to find the caverns, flood your fort on purpose, smooth over and engrave your entire fort, give each and everyone of your dwarves massive and lavishly decorated rooms, build a massive fort with huge glass towers, channel out the word "tits" into the ground, use your imagination and have some fun

He's playing 40d. There ARE NO CAVERNS.

If your dwarves are going melancholy, you should make a nicely done jumping point. Preferably with a waterfall and some nice engravings and statues.

Mega-projects can be fun, but what I would recommend is putting a dozen or so people into a squad, have them train up to legendary in wrestling.  Then stand down the squad, make sure none of them have any jobs, and have a 1-tile meeting room.  Soon, they will have all legendary social skills and likely all be brothers (and sisters) in all but name.

Now kill half of them (I recommend a cave-in).

Since they've only ever trained, they shouldn't have the 'doesn't really care anymore' thought from seeing too much death, so they should be deeply affected by the death of their comrades.  They'll be armored, super-dwarvenly tough, strong, and agile, and they'll be PISSED.

Then you get to try to recover from the resultant tantrum spiral.  If your food/booze stores happen to get flooded with magma in this process, then so much the better.

Even a 2x2 40d fort in a calm plain with very little metal, no magma, no sand, and just the occasional goblin raid can be fun. You just have to have a little imagination.

How did you get the helicopter to fly... I've been trying magma but every time the heat melts the pilot.

Just go into the raws and use the [FLIER] tag.
As for boredom, pointless megaproject. Make Armok proud, boy.

embark on an area filled with the undead.

This is my solution.  Keeping all the undead away generally keeps me entertained through the dull parts (30-80 dwarves).

Though lately all my undead have been confined to the streams/rivers or simply not showing up at all.  I'm on a Teriffying map at the moment and have not one single undead, neither in the way of fish, critter, or dead shrubberies.  I saw one demon rat, and that's it.

this problem really stems from the simple fact that the game is not finished.  You spend the first two or three years working the fort up to self sufficiency and when you reach that point where you are not struggling to survive anymore, you need to start engineering your own fun.  If, at any point, the game becomes complete, there will be many things you could do once you reach this point in a fort, like diplomacy, military campaigning, organized revolts, smarter sieges, ect.  For now, you need to, perhaps, embark somewhere challenging, where it will be a constant effort to find a source of water while fighting off yetis, or something.   Or you may wish to set goals for yourself, mega projects among them, but also things like making a fort without traps or  building a treasure room with renewable magma waterfalls; the only thing keeping you from enjoying the game at its current state is a lack of imagination.
