Dwarf Fortress Poster
« on: June 13, 2010, 07:57:50 am »

It happens often that in my freelance illustration work, i got no idea what to draw next.
I do my share of "fine arts" type of work, so it's sometimes refreshing to go for something completly out of the artsie sphere.
That's where DF kicks in. Thinking about the game provokes all kinds of crazy ideas, and even if it's not about telling DF stories or illustrating elements of the game, it's a wonderful "inspiration box" to pick in now and then.

8 months ago, I took the glowing pit idea and used it as a base for a cavernous surreal landscape:
Spoiler: The Doom Below (click to show/hide)

And more recently, while thinking about ideas for cheesy retro-80ies posters i went all like:

Spoiler: Bigger version (click to show/hide)

Armok anger details:

Spoiler: Crushing Fist of Armok (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Dwarven Metals (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: The Crumbling Fortress (click to show/hide)

I haven't printed it yet but the goal is to make a 45x60 cm poster (18x24 inches i think). It misses a tag line and probably a mention at the top such as "A Tarn Adams/ Toady one game". Technically, it's some photo manipulation with Photoshop with some digital painting on top to recolor it all.

I hope you enjoy it, looking forward to hear about Bay12ers opinion.

I propose a truly dorfy solution: toady should implement a special helmet that (mostly) protects against fall damage, so that the toughest dwarves of the fortress can take the 10-z level jump down, pick and axe in hand, and construct stairs back up to the upper levels.

I guess the only reason why so few people have posted is that they were at a loss for words.

Seriously, you need to make more. Please? Pretty please?

Yeah, there's nothing to say but "Awesome" and "I want one" :).

Soviet Travolta? Soviet? Do you live in Russia? Somewhere near St-Petersburg or Moscow? I would like to buy a poster :D.

Edit. Ah, "Strasbourg, France". Sadface :D.

I wish I could draw like that.

Actually there's almost no drawing involved. Most of the work is getting photos and layers of colours blended together.
Sure, i learnt how to compose, but it's more related to eye-training than pure virtuosity.
Also, 7 freaking years of art school: got to learn something when you're on the state's money!

About sending/selling prints, it's my goal someday, but i haven't got to it yet.
I want to make a whole serie of posters in the same league (not related to DF but who knows, if inspiration lacks), and then maybe set some sort of online shop, shipping internationally. I'll probably advertise when it becomes a reality.
For instance, my next idea is around the internet over-used word "epic": something like EPIC word in huge 3d mountain shape, topped by a body-builded metal guitarist head-banging throwing lightning with his guitar, perforating stone, atop of a cloudy sky where dragons fight pegasi. Got to be as silly as the word got, see?

I'm not too sure about using Toady-related material as a base for art, and then come on Bay12 to sell or else, so i'm willing to listen if anyone has arguments for it or against it.

You could try to make an arrangement with Toady to give him some of the profits from the sale of prints.

Toady's not big on arrangements. A better bet would be to go "hey, I made this, and some people want to buy prints of it. Would you be cool with it?"

Would you mind if I print off a copy for myself and a friend?  By the way, do you have any larger resolutions available?  600x800 is too small for a desktop and might be too low-res for the poster printer at school.

Also, this. This would be the coolest way to donate.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Well i did make the image in a 300dpi resolution for 45x60cm so it's pretty huge, but i'm not too fond about giving out original high res files. Sure it's infinitely duplicable but it's somehow the "original" piece. But i can probably adapt the image to make a wallpaper. I'm thinking 1980x1200 and 1680x1050 for 16:10, and 1280x960 and 1024x768 for 4:3. Am I right about that?

The image might feel different as i'll have to adapt the vertical composition to an horizontal one, but it will be done.

You need to sell these. My only worry is that it looks a bit like fist... Well, let's just say if you made the lava brown someone would get off to it.

Make more, too!

And that would raise the interesting yet neverending debate: Is the artist responsible for what is seen, or does the viewer holds the most responsability? In this particular case, i totally decline any of it!

Then you forfeit any right to take the benefits of anything good seen in it. =p
