Sorry if this is a repost - speed in DF 2010?
« on: June 12, 2010, 11:37:43 am »

I'm a new reader of the DF forums, and tried searching but didn't see what I was looking for in the first several hits there, so I'm sorry if this is a repost.

I was wondering if anyone else has had speed actually drop with the 2010 version of DF?  Things have been rather strange for me:

I run df on two machines - my desktop and my laptop.   .40 ran very zippy on my desktop and about 33 fps on my lappy, but the new version changed things in that regard,  With the addition of Partial Print, 2010 runs faster on the lappy (yay!), but overall the new DF runs much slower on my desktop (wut?).  Just wondering if anyone else has had this behavior also?

Just as an example, world gen of a large region in .40 took only about 1 minute to do (on my desktop), but 2010 takes just as long to simply get to history generation cycles, which then take much longer that before.  I haven't been using large regions in the new version because there's no need, but I give this just for an example.  Even normal size regions take a lot longer to generate, and then playing is slower.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to speed it up?  Should I try changing the FPS cap?  (it's at 100, which is what .40 was at also)

Any help is appreciated.  :)

This is the slowest release version ever, and likely will remain that way for many years into the future. On the next big release, things will be sped up through optimizations and such. This release contained nothing but features which slows it down considerably.

I would imagine it would probably be slower than other releases simply because of the added amount of creatures in all the caverns below.

Hmm..  Ok.  Are there any suggestions on how I can speed it up for now, though?  I'll try embarking on a 3x3 since width doesn't seem to matter as much since we now have tons of depth..

Mine was about the game till .06. Which for some reason runs 8 times faster. I went from highs of 20 fps, to lows of 80. So so much better.

Hey TheyTarget,

Are you by chance using a 64-bit operating system? I've found that it .06 runs much better for me as well.

The newer versions do tend to be slower, as we have much more stuff going on, especially with the caverns. Turning off temp and weather especially can be a big help, and try setting your fps cap higher, like 1000 or so. I've found that it seems to be a little faster for me. Hope you get some more speed out of things.

Definitely embark 3x3.  Now that there's more interesting stuff in the depths, you don't need a wide area anymore.
