Steam[The application made by Valve]
« on: June 11, 2010, 04:00:03 pm »

This topic is to talk about the thing in general. Faults, ideas for it, how you like it, etc.

Also, how do you change the target in a shortcut of a steam game? When I right click>properties of a shortcut on my desktop that was a game I bought from steam, I can't change the target like I can do on other shortcuts of other games. Any ideas? I need it to enable something.

Eh. It never gives the right time-to-completion, download rate, download size, or any of that. It locks up and crashes frequently, too.

And for your shortcut, they're .url shortcuts, which point to a web URL, and not .lnk shortcuts, which normally point to a program on your computer. Just make a shortcut to wherever the program you're trying to run is.

I do like it. Rarely have problems, except on release day/week...and patch day....and free weekends....

Ok, so it has all the issues of a major network hub. But I do like how it keeps me in contact with a lot of gamers at once, and when games are integrated right, the Steam front end is useful for messaging, joining, searching, all that jazz.

The recent update...meh. Was fine with the old one, am fine with this one. I don't get too deep into Steam functionality, so it didn't take long to readjust.

And their Christmas specials are freaking awesome. If you uhm...have a habit of acquiring games illegally, their specials are a good chance to pay your share for games you've enjoyed...a very discounted share. Lots of games I've pirated in the past, I'm just waiting for them to show up on Steam so I can buy them for real. I like too that Steam seems to have no real cut off for the games they'll make available...hell you can get Fallout on Steam. I think I spent like $10 and got all the Jedi Knights and Dark Forces for like...$10. Can't beat that.

Just make a shortcut to wherever the program you're trying to run is.
I could quite possibly be retarded in this matter, I'm not sure, but please tell me how to make a shortcut to wherever the program you're trying to run is in step by step format, please.

1. Find the program you're trying to run, wherever you installed it.
2. Right click->Create Shortcut.

Common , I think, is only things like demos etc. If it's a purchased game then it'll be in a specific directory. Also i didn't know who you were, Xyetc but now I do =D

Not on my system. All game install directories fall under common.

On mine, LFD2 installed under common, but a HL2 demo, Portal, and Eternal Silence all installed in my username directory.

The only game I have installed in my username directory is Pirates, Vikings and Knights II, which I have not actually played a game of.

Steamworks games install in the username directory.
Games licensed for purchase through Steam install in the common directory.
Steamworks is mostly Source engine games.  Stuff by Valve and/or using the Steam username-based DRM.

I'm sure they use the Steamworks definition a bit more loosely, also referring to the server browsers and the Steam cloud, etc...

Loves to crash when your downloading stuff, especially if you try and launch a game while downloading something.

The only problem I have with it is the death grip it holds on the games. No connection? Steam gives you the middle finger and you're sunk.

I have actually never had it crash on me. Ever. The games can occasionally crash but that's hardly Steam's fault
