They're not always tested properly by Microsoft before being rolled out. The problem has gotten better over the last decade or so, but people are still seeing their computers get nuked because of incompetent or lazy code from Microsoft. A much more common problem, however, is that users cannot set a schedule for updates, and that means that computers will shut down despite protests to the contrary, even if you're working on something or gaming.

How *do* you disable sticky keys? Seriously.
It's in the Ease of Access portion of the control panel. I just shut everything in that part off since I don't need it.

It's one of the first things you should do as a computer owner, along with disabling sticky keys :v
Why should automatic updates be turned off? Just to ask ._.
When you're working on an assignment and you're almost done but then MICROSOFT DECIDES TO UPDATE AND SHUT DOWN THE CONPUTER DELETING HOWEVER MANY PAGES RHGHEGRHSYRBFHDVKJFRUFBDUTFDY
is a fairly good reason.

Do you not get that popup that says "Windows will update in x minutes, would you like to postone this for x amount of time" ?

That often doesn't show if you're doing something fullscreened. Such as, oh, gaming. I lost so many hours of playtime before I developed the habit of ensuring that updates are shut down ._.

Hey. Hey now.
Don't y'all be hating on Sticky Keys.

I have fond memories of how, back in school (Primary, I'm pretty sure) we had these computers that would make a high-pitched beep when Sticky Keys was turned on. Or off. And you could spam it off and on with the same key.
Sticky keys would come to be the bane of our computer teachers, as they vainly patrolled the classroom trying to find the source of the annoying noise... only for the kid/kids who had been doing it to stop, and a bunch of kids on the other side of the room to replace them.

Oh, you did that too? That was always the highlight of visiting the library - also known as the only place in the school that had more than one computer.

We did that, but most of the computers in my school literally had no speakers (many of them didn't even have basic motherboard speakers, which made beep codes hell to try to diagnose when things went horribly wrong. :P).

Several years ago my laptop decided to update. It took 1 hour to download the files and 3 hours to apply the updates. Then it told me an error happened and it needs to roll back the changes, which took another 4 hours. The laptop was completely unusable for that time.
I haven't updated since then.
