One of my classes requires a book that costs more to rent than all the books for my other class cost to buy new.

Take it out of the school library and either xerox or photograph all the pages.

Or else, buy it used.

Or try to find cheap/free digital download.

Morals, ethics, laws, conscience, second-hand purchasing.
Can anyone translate this?

Sounds like "don't pirate, buy used". Depending on the media and publisher, though, buying used is equally as bad as pirating.

You can always borrow, assuming you can find any owners.

My wife is obsessing over the thought of them coming back and hurting her.
See, I never understood this. The whole thing about thieves is that they don't come in when people are around because they don't want to fight. If they came in while you were home, you could probably drive them off with a couch cushion, because 1: they usually don't want to hurt anyone, and 2: there is now a witness who saw them break into a home.

That and robbers don't usually hit the same place twice. All in all, the chances of them coming back and hurting someone is extreeeeeemely low.
Then again, I tend to think a bit more logically than emotionally.

Yup.  Exactly the angle I've been trying to push.  Unsuccessfully.

Agreed. You'd have to be an extremely phenomenally stupid criminal to return to the scene of the crime.

I disagree on that last point.

Secondhand purchasing is definitely superior to first-hand purchasing, especially in the case of textbooks, music, and DVDs, because the proceeds don't go to the manufacturer. Textbook publishers are scum, as are movie studios and recording studios.

Can confirm that textbook publishers are literally worse than Hitler.
However, purchasing movies/music because you want to support the artist is totally fine. Desirable, even, unless you have a grudge against people with more money than you and desperately want to decline their publishers an insignificant sum.

I always got the impression that not a lot of that money actually goes to the artists; That most of it instead goes to scumbag executives who spend it on lobbyists to convince the government to censor the internet.

Yeah, but that's because your political system is fucked.

I sort of like how inefficient the government in America is, though. It's by design, remember. It keeps us from fucking everything up too much.
