I think the "stop having fun guys" are over-represented on the internet.  Still definitely exist though.

There's also a certain kind of person that thinks their playstyle is innately superior because its like the competitive community even though they themselves are not competitive.  That's a common idiocy in most gaming communities, forums, comment threads... probably in real life too although I only know one person like that personally.

Ever played League of Legends?

Oh my looooooooooooooooooord.

... honestly, what I've played of LoL actually had lower jackhole saturation than normal for multiplayer games. Never did try to get into ranked or anything, but the strong majority of people I've ended up in games with were fairly chill. Played DotA 2 even less, but the same statement applies fairly well. Bit less chill, but that's probably more because of its ancestry than anything.

Now, DotA 1? That shit was toxic as hell, especially once the bots and crap started showing up.

Some communities are definitely better than others.  Stop Having Fun Guys are nigh unavoidable in League of Legends.  Almost every match, you'll run into people telling you you're doing it wrong and should go die in a fire if you don't immediately follow any advice to the letter.

But I definitely ran into a solid wall of "items aren't fair" mentality back when I played Smash Bros a lot.  All my friends were cool with it for a while, but over time there was this drift that occurred within my social circle.  All the good players got really strict about setting certain conditions or refusing to play, and everyone else still didn't care so much but wouldn't want to play with me because I was well beyond them.  And I pretty much skipped Brawl, so playing Smash Bros online was never a thing for me.

We'll see what happens as I get back into it now on the Wii U.

it wouldn't be fun without the items at all. The randomness is part of it, and allows less skilled players (like myself) to have a chance.

Otherwise it ends up like every other fighting game. I remember in Street Fighter 2 it would be a war of setup between me and my sister. either I'd back her into a corner and chun li leg kick her to death, or she'd corner me and blanca electrocute me to death.

So, wait, I'm not tracking smash 4, can items not be disabled or something in smash 4? Don't see what Putnam's upset about.

I find playing with items less fun. then again, I find the "competitive" play of Smash, 1v1 with stocks and no items, to be more fun than playing 4 people free for alls with items.

You can't turn off Capsules, if memory serves, without turning off everything.

Nothing.
There's nothing wrong with turning everything on, either.
Or having some on, some off.

Come on, guys, we have another thread for this.  :P

Sakurai's built everything competitive-related off of the idea that people prefer final destination over all other stages, which is patently false. The itemless online mode in Smash 4 is built around this, where you can only play on Final Destination'd stages.

Why do people complain that Smash Bros. isn't designed to be competitive? That's like complaining about League being too competitive.

It's more complaining that they tried to cater to the competitive community and ended up hilariously off-base.

Watch them create a patch that adds in "delta" versions of each stage, which is exactly like the "omega" version but Battlefield instead of Final Destination, then make "For Glory" into the Delta version of each stage instead of omega.

Wait, that won't ever happen. Never mind.

AFAIK, they were banned mostly because it's salty as hell when you lose to a lucky item and salt is pretty detrimental to communities (I.E no johns, items give you a real nice scapegoat to blame for your inadequacies).

Uh, what does salt have to do with Smash Bros or TF2?
