Also did SIrus block my avatar or me entirely because I was all like "oh wow, she's a trucker and a female and that's like the front lines in a field that is entirely male dominated. She probably has all kinds of interesting stories about working as a trucker that I would love to hear and I'd be curious about how other truckers treat her." Now I feel like we will never have these heart to hearts because she blocked me for a not really very graphic zombie avatar.

Blocked the avatar. I couldn't see it very well because it had been downsized and it looked like a shock image I was unfortunate enough to have seen once. Some person missing most of their face. And I was in no hurry to see it again, so I blocked it. Not a big fan of blood or gore (even photoshopped) when I'm not in the right frame of mind for it.

To be honest, it does seem inappropriate for the forums. Toady likes to keep everything PG, or very close, and despite the things we do to our dorfs, a lot of users also like a clean environment.

If I could have my way, I too would post horrible gore-porn when the conversation demands illustration. I mean, I would spoiler it and label it but... Toady doesn't even like links, and that would be rude.

I've almost always use dude or bro in a pejorative sense.

my point was, I could pull up more disturbing images on the walking dead, a basic cable show. It's not even close to gore porn.

... That is so far from my point that you're basically on the moon.

I'm not saying "Hurr durr, it's all small, it looks gorey to me!"

I'm saying that when you're just browsing the forum, you're not going to open up every avatar into a new window and see it full-sized. You're going to see each of them small sized, and that's what matters. Not "Hey, this big picture looks cool! Let's use it as an avatar," but "What will this picture look like shrunk down?"

Out of the corner of your eye, just reading the forum, that picture is just a mess of blood and bone. The immediate reaction is visceral disgust and discomfort. It doesn't matter what it is, whether it's photoshopped obviously or not when you blow it up full sized. What matters is what it looks like immediately viewed, scrolling down the forum, avatar-sized.

A lot of the avatars on this forum really don't work, because the person who used them thought "This looks like a cool picture!" but didn't think about how small the actual picture will be. All the detail is lost, and usually it looks like just a weird blob or noise. It's just worse when it's a gore picture, because you get the annoyance of "What the hell is that anyway?" and the disgust of the gore.
