Hrm...? Maybe, but from what I recall the US legalizing cannabis nation wide was projected to cut cartel funds by... either a third or two thirds, forget exactly which. Think it was "just" a third. That was a while back, so maybe it's changed some, but... fairly doubtful. Either way, that would be an absolutely massive economic blow to the southern drug pushers. No organization reacts very well to suddenly losing (at minimum) a third of their operating resources.

Because they already have the enemies from doing their drug selling, and trying to go into legitimate business would just take away their meat shields underlings while they retain their enemies.

Oh, did you mean BEFORE they made any enemies in the cartels? Well, how would they get the funds to start up, and how would they know they're smart enough if they don't prove themselves to be smart enough?

You know, I have to wonder sometimes why the cartel runners don't go into legitimate businesses. They're probably smart enough to do that AND succeed, and they don't have to worry about other businesses coming to whack them.

They do. First they make lots of drug money, then they go to the banks and invest that money and get... Whatever "investment return" is called in English.

Back at the old place. Because my mom feels guilty about leaving him still. We're spending Christmas here.

He ordered chinese food. We have no choice in what we eat. We eat what he eats, and there's never any room for discussion as to what we have. It's always whatever he wants. If anyone dares grab something else to eat he would flip shit. Even if the two restaurants are side-by-side.

I don't like chinese food, but I said I would eat it anyways. My mom decided that she would get me pizza instead. I said no, because I don't want him getting pissy.

"Fuck you, you're getting a pizza!"

No seriously, it's fine. I'll eat the chinese food.

"Don't fucking tell me what to do! I'm getting you a pizza!"

I didn't even want a pizza though.

Another thing is that they both keep referring to chinese food as "chink" food. It's gotten to the point where some of the restaurant employees will sometimes refer to the food as that when my mom or her ex are ordering from them.

While drinking out with friends I remembered a certain thing that happened in my past. How someone whom I considered one of my best friends and have known for almost ten years abandoned me when I needed them the most. And then had the fucking nerve to come to me several months later and say that they're not angry anymore that I told them to go fuck themselves for saying what they said and that they wanted to be friends again.

Fuck yeah memories.

The 3G and wifi on my phone both stopped working last night, so I won't have any internet access at all while I'm at my family's. It's a Christmas miracle!

I could have fixed this by restarting my phone but it took me about 24 hours to think to do that.

I do have internet again though.

abuse is a cycle. Your mom probably feels like she isn't good enough for something better. He tears her down, it wears her down psychologically, she returns because she feels she deserves the abuse or can't get better, ad nauseum.

I don't know what the answer to that problem is though, other than to be supportive of your mom and be there for her if she needs you. Doesn't mean that shit isn't awful.

edit: what me? The zombie face? It's not even real, it's photoshopped.

I'm going to to provide the counter-argument that your mom's treatment of you has been heavily controlling and before you get involved with anything you should consider how it will effect your own position.  Just because someone is being mean to her doesn't negate how she's acted towards you.

Also they're both apparently racist to on top of it all, that's lovely.

I don't see how being supportive of his mom to try and counteract the demoralizing effect her abuser has on her would conflict with his own autonomy. He can certainly still be firm about not being manipulated, but as for having to deal with the ex, it sort comes with the abusive relationship territory. Everyone else gets swept up into it. And inevitably you get frustrated and angry because you can't figure out why she keeps going back to him, but the only thing that might help is emotional support.

I don't know, maybe I am missing part of the story.

As for the racism... yea, my in laws are racist. My grandparents were all racist. You don't get to pick your family. I don't think he's going to be able to change that, tbh. The ex would probably just flip out if he tried to say anything. Could maybe talk to his mom privately.

-snip-
Sorry, I should have been more explicit.

BF's relationship with his mom is... well, abusive is a strong word, I don't know about that.  But very unhealthy, absolutely.

She is controlling *far* beyond what could be unexpected of a normal parent/child relationship.  IRRC, one example of this is that he's never done his own homework, because she does it for him and won't let him do it himself.  She's also done things like saying she's responsible for everything that he accomplishes.

Now, beyond that I don't know much about her.  But getting involved in the whole boyfriend conflict, even just by expressing support, might get BF in trouble.  For all I know she'll get mad at him for implying she has a problem, or something.

Basically, he doesn't owe her anything on the emotional support front, and should see to his own well-being first in this situation.  If that means staying out of their shit, well, that's an option.
