The radio this morning had some program about the dangers of obesity. Apparently, it now causes cancer, and if you're obese, it's YOUR fault and only YOUR fault. Strangely, this was not the fundie Christian station, but the oldies station that has a higher than average number of advertisements for local churches.

It is a well-known fact that severe obesity is associated with the metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and other diseases. Epidemiological studies have suggested that obesity is also associated with increased risk of several cancer types.

Overweight and obesity are associated with increased postmenopausal breast cancer risk; however, it is unclear whether losing excess weight will lower risk.

That's just the first page of Google Scholar, results since 2010.

Have they ruled out other causes though? There are so many factors that could cause cancer.

If the other causes are heavily correlated with obesity, does it even matter?

And if not, then why do we see a correlation between obesity and increase in cancer risk?

Given all the health effects that obesity has, it's entirely possible that it screws up something which ends up raising the risk of cancer.

Just what is getting screwed up though or via what mechanism obesity is increasing cancer risk, no idea.

It quite literally doesn't matter if you get cancer from obesity or something which is causes by obesity, the end conclusion (obese people get more cancer) remains the same.

Got my exam schedule, and it turns out that I have exams in:

1) Organic Chemistry
2) History of Jazz (a blowoff class if ever there was one)
3) Anatomy and Pathophysiology
4) Calculus II

all on Monday. As in, 3 days from now. None of the professors were willing to move their exams back, so I guess I'm just gonna burn the fuck out and fail my Anatomy and Calculus exams. Goodbye for now Bay 12, I have work to do...
