Heh, I actually wonder... how many other foods could work if you used some kind of noble mold, natural or engineered?

I will commit murder if I hear one more person say "Back in my day..."

OH. OH.

Please enlighten me about how you didn't have time- and money-wasting distractions back in your day, like gambling, alcohol, or just fucking about when you could be doing something important. Please tell me about how every war America had "back in your day" was totally justified and turned out awesome for everybody involved. Please tell me about how Presidents only started making terrible decisions in the 2000s, and every single office-holder "back in your day" was a completely spotless model of the ideal American man. Please tell me how life was better when you could ask the doctor what was wrong with you, and he could shrug his shoulders and reply "I dunno," or he could say "The vaccine for it hasn't been invented yet, have a nice death." And please fucking tell me how life was so great and wholesome before 9-1-1 services, before instant communication with anybody anywhere in the world for as little as $45 a month, before the bottomless well of human information that is the Internet, before GPS for when you get lost on country backroads, hell, before you had a freezer to keep your god damn drinks cold.

There is a slight amount of moral degradation, however, from one generation to the next. So, depending on the place, things may have been better from a moral standpoint "back in the day."

All relative, of course.

Back in their day, the Internet did not exist

And neither did those people from the Internet, unless you had localized trolling via post it notes or newspaper ads

One ancient Egypt papyrus contains a rant about how the new generation is acting all uppity and that signifies the end of the world.

Yeah.

I dunno, people have always been shitty, it's why we have so many wars all the time.  We're just less shitty to people's faces unless we have that seething rage that makes you forget about the consequences.

It doesn't take that much to insult someone on the internet.  Poke some keys, fire and forget.  Disassociation would be the simplest term for it, I suppose.  People have always talked behind people's backs, it's just easier to do it to someone's face when there isn't physically a face there.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

EDIT:  Also, most older folks are looking at things through red-tinted nostalgia glasses.  Almost everything seems better looking back at it from 20 years in the future.  "People were so much nicer."  "Dirt tasted better."  "Man it was fun driving through Death Valley without air-conditioning and a pair of siblings beating the crap out of each other in the back seat."

Not really. Culture changes, but that doesn't make it worse. I wouldn't consider things like Universal Suffrage, the freedom of information movement, or transhumanism discussions moral decay.

*Shrug*

Of course, those are good to have. Cultural change can be good, and it can be bad. The degradation of family values, children out of wedlock, a mistress on the side, etc. are more prevalent today than "back in the day."

I'm not saying that then was better than now, I'm only saying that to someone reared with specific values, much like you were, it is hard to see different as good. Especially when they're told, as in the case of marriage, that it is necessary for a healthy family.

"All relative, of course."

I did say it was relative, didn't I? :P

I don't believe in absolutist morality. Morality is, essentially, what the individual views it as. Even if this leads to murder, there will be some (possibly bonkers) moral reasoning.

Spotify is repeating the same two ads over and over again. It's driving me mad.

I might just get Spotify Premium to get rid of the ads >.>

Yeah, degradation is an awful word.

The degradation of family values, children out of wedlock, a mistress on the side, etc. are more prevalent today than "back in the day."

Horseshit. Children out of wedlock is consistently going down and the main difference between today and back then is that today people are called out for their dirty shit instead of it being swept under the rug.

Em...if you think I've raised an invalid point, that's fine, but I'd prefer it if you wouldn't refer to something I say as "horseshit" :/

Also, that article refers to teenagers in the united states, not standards in general.
