I dunno man, that's like... 6 burritos.

It's a week's groceries if you're living on butter, rice, and onions like I did ._.

... both statements are accurate.

Though yeah, 4-5 USD worth of rice, with the rest going into water/heating. 10 bucks can cover a week. Not the most thrilling week, but rice is delicious so :V

... wouldn't bother with the butter or onions, myself, though. Soy or bullion instead >_>

I plan to live at home and go to university, given a handy semi-proximity to the university in question.

So yay, leaching off parents for food!

Food not paid for = higher food costs
Higher food costs = Less money for raises and new hires
Less money for raises and new hires = longer hours for you at shittier pay.

You need to move somewhere employers treat their employees like human beings.

I feel so sorry for you I won't even taunt you with all other legally mandated benefits I get at work.

Or smaller profit margin. That's a thing, you know.
You probably don't know how much food gets thrown out in restaurants and stores everyday, just because it is considered better than telling customers "we ran out of that". It's already in the budjet, management is just being dicks by not giving it to their employees.

It's the reality of business. Most places do at least give employees a discount. But cheese is not cheap, for real. When you multiple out x numbers of kitchen and wait staff using between 50% to 200%  of a product that a normal dish calls for, and they're not paying for it, 1 to 3 times a day, 7 days a week, that money adds up.

I don't have a problem with it anyway, stuff here's pretty cheap.

Generally not a good idea, or at least one you should examine very carefully. Part of the point of university is to be a slow transition into adulthood - you are very much independent, but still to a degree guided and supported by your parents. By living at home, you may miss this step and instead be stuck in a school-like state. YMMV, but it'd have done me little good to have stayed at home - and I have a fairly good relationship with my parents.

I know, but when you compare it to what gets thrown out every day anyway it doesn't measure up. Usually staff is smart enough to take what's near expiration date and there is lot of and isn't in risk of running out (and most places have policies on that), which means stuff that would get thrown out anyway. There's not that much money in it, in the end.

Whilst this may be true, I also don't want to pay for accommodation when I don't have to. It may mature me to live with strangers, etc., but it will also empty my pockets.

Lentils! Lentils all the way. Also noodles with all sorts of sauce - tomato sauce in particular is a good way to learn how to cook freestyle, without really following a recipe, and being able to do that goes a long way as a student. Also Bratkartoffeln (I refuse to use the crappy American terms). And yeah, rice, preferrably basmati, and prepared as pilaw. Omelettes are always good. Pancakes are fairly easy, French toast too - great for preparing for company while too drunk to stand upright. Casseroles are a bit more involved, but don't take much skill or effort - there's a great sauerkraut casserole I should do again sometime...
The problem with home cooking is that you'll usually be preparing family-sized amounts. Inviting guests over has multiple benefits, especially if they return the favor (and can cook).

Ninjaedit: Yeah, rent's costly...
