I'm in support of Arx's plan if you cannot leave. Although, you'd have to make sure you are the sole person with possession of the card and that they don't try to steal it instead of learning to budget.

Just make the PIN as long as possible, and theft leaves the picture. No point to taking the card if it's unusuable~!

Can't you just ditch them?
Not really.

I'm worried about that.
Although it's not like I've got anything to lose.
What's the worst that could happen, them kicking me out?

Technically jointly owned rented, but pretty much.

... yeah, if you're the single income (especially a fast food worker income) for a five person home, and they're spending money on fast food and shit like DVDs (especially in the face of, y'know, internet or the goddamn library -- the latter often has various non-print media on the shelves, these days.)... you kinda' need to put your foot down and start enforcing some fiscal responsibility.

Like, at that point, it's not even a want. You need to, because you're doing neither yourself nor your fellow house members any favors by allowing that sort of gross financial irresponsibility. You'd think they'd fucking know about that sort of thing considering you seem to have implied everyone else in the building is your age or older, but I guess some people just... yeah.

I'd definitely be keeping a tab on local rent rates and utility costs and whatnot, though. Make sure you have a backup plan ready and available for if they do lose their mind and try to evict you.

Though to the latest post: If it's jointly owned, consider renegotiating with the landlord for single ownership? If you're actually the only one paying for it, it's likely you could swing that. Then if your fellow tenants kick up a fuss, you can call up the law and have them shipped out.

Step 1: Acquire bank account, debit card.
Step 2: Give them a monthly budget. They receive this much hard cash. If they exceed that, they starve. Never buy anything without the card.
Step 3: Profit.

This would probably not work, but it's nice to think about.
This, except the last sentence. Just take what's yours.

Heh. I'm sure the landlord would evict the non-workers before removing the only current source of income in the house, once aware of the situation.

I'm the youngest person, at 21.
And these are people that used to be homeless, and they have learned nothing at all about how to take care of themselves with regard to money.
The biggest problem is that I'm the only one that isn't too lazy to get out of bed on a daily basis, let alone actually work.

And how did it end up jointly rented in that case?

Marriage, basically.
Which is why it's such a complicated issue that I only have partial control over.

And this is why my wife and I have an agreement. If her father for whatever reason moves in, I move out.

Honestly, it's starting to sound like you should talk to a lawyer about this.

Forgive my frankness, but - why'd you marry a nutjob?
