Also, as a fairly lavish aristocrat, I am quite well-informed as to what constitutes scrubby, plebeian, or the otherwise lower-class. And I can assure you, Steam is not among them.
A bias against Steam is like saying "I love shopping, but I'm never going to go to a mall."

I don't have steam because
1. I have heard several accounts (here, even) of it sucking up money like nobody's business; I don't have an awful lot of cash
2. My crappy internet connection could not handle buying internet games of a decent size on a regular basis
3. My parents would probably get pissed over it because they still think video games are merely toys (arguments like "If [abandoned movie/book series they like] started making new [books/movies], would you not buy them, because you 'have enough [books/movies]'?" don't work, even)

I haven't heard a single One Direction song that I know of. My only exposure of them comes from people talking about how much they (supposedly) suck

They're only popular because they're pretty. Anyone who says that [1D/5SoS/whatever boy band is popular]'s music is good is just embarrassed that they only like them for their looks.

What? Like every third sentence I hear her say involves them. I know too much about them, being a straight guy who hates mainstream music.

She even seems to have intentionally forgotten that they were used in the UK to endorse Pokémon Black and White. Like she employed doublethinking on that or something.

It was the way you referred to them that made me think that. The, "BOY BAND CALLED ONE DIRECTION," in particular. Normally you wouldn't refer to a thing like that unless you're unfamiliar with it and assuming your audience is too.

It... really depends on the person. I'm relatively certain I've sunk less than $300 USD into steam (and, via bundles and other sites, stuff that activates on steam) over the last... (when did Terraria come out...?) three years, looks like? Comes out to something like less than ~8 bucks a month in entertainment funds, which is like... a book at retail prices (admittedly, it's considerably more books at used prices, but eh), or an unnecessary meal or two at a restaurant. Music CD, whatev'.

And between fairly careful purchase practices and giveaways, that's ended up being around 130 games in the library, most of which get kicked on at least once or twice a year (barring the ones that I nabbed at low cost in expectation of eventually having a computer worth a damn.). As entertainment goes, steam's pretty cost efficient.

The bright side is there's quite a bit of darn decent pieces of software in steam's library that are pretty small, size wise. You might be better off eying GoG or whatev' if bandwidth is a serious concern, though.
