Anyway, lab got fucked up again. This time not quite so badly (and also not my fault.) The lab was preparation of salicylic acid from wintergreen extract, and one of the first steps involved heating wintergreen oil under reflux. The tubing burst (there was a tear on the inside that filled with water) and popped off the water-in connection at the source, which sent the hose flying and sprayed water everywhere. The water was just annoying, but the hose knocked the reaction vessel off of the heat source and I lost all but a little bit of the mixture.

There was enough left in there to finish the synthesis and for recrystallization and analysis afterward, but there were only a few grains of powder to work with instead of the small pile I should have had. The glassware we have isn't really big enough to work in such small quantities effectively, so I had to work very slowly and carefully. I did eventually get everything done correctly, though, and I won't get any points taken off.

On the plus side though, a lot of my glassware smelled minty fresh for the rest of the lab.
