Well, for one, it's Windows 8.

And for two, it's on a three-year complete warranty, so even if I break it (twice), I'll get a new one at the same value? And things like this are free.

Warranty was like, double the cost of the actual machine, but I think it was worth it, considering a) how reliant I am on my computer, and b) how tough I am on hardware.

I can speak with experience that Acer is not worth it if you're really tough on hardware. My brother had an Acer and with his not-very-intensive use, the thing started breaking down as the warranty approached. Mobo issues, drive issues, you name it - half the time it was in the shop getting fixed. Warranty expires and not soon after the power supply (not just a bad battery, the whole thing) goes dead.

And that it has Windows 8 is enough reason to reformat the hard drive and install an OEM version of 7. OEM version being the important bit.

If money is an issue, can't you just build your own PC?

I mean, if I can do it...

You're all lovely people.

Problem: It's already been purchased? So, like, dutchling... don't be a moron. "Oh, you have a computer you just bought? GO BUILD A NEW ONE YOU SLIMY GIT!" seriously dude?

And, also, I'm not fucking retarded, though I was when I purchased this. I mixed up Acer and Asus and only realized this when I got the box home. So, seriously, not fucking helping dude.

I'm giving W8 a chance for only two reasons: One, this thing is gonna have to last me through university. Two, 8.2, and Windows 7 becoming unsupported potentially.

I can speak with experience that Acer is not worth it if you're really tough on hardware.
Anymore, anyway. Both the longest lasting and hardest used computers I've ever had were Acers. That said, as I've said before, I think the laptop I got from 'em that lasted something like 3-4 years without a functioning fan (and a good year or three with one, to boot) and still (barely) turns on after something fast approaching a decade was the last good computer they ever made.

Also had an old 200-something mhz CPU tower from 'em that lasted forever and a day. There was once a time they built pretty damn tough machines.

That time is no longer, but it once was.

... but yeah, Dutchling's advice might actually be close to a good idea. If you can find someone else with a slightly less capable, but more reliable machine (or someone just gullible enough to trade off whatever they've got for yours), that would be willing to trade... or just someone desperate who needs a computer immediately and would give the price for a better machine, stuff like that. Might be an option. Trade up, basically.

Though yeah, it's a good thing you've got that warranty. I could pretty much guarantee you an acer wouldn't last you through a four year program or whathaveyou, especially not if it's a laptop.

Bio test today. Forgot that we needed a scantron, at 11:26.

My class starts at 1130.

So My fat ass sprints all the fucking way down four flights of stairs, into the bookstore to buy a pack of scantrons, all the way back up four more fucking flights of stairs, to my classroom, where I learn that the professor was giving out free scantrons.

RPS. Their brand of smugness has finally gotten to me. They wrote a big op-ed piece about how they're all about subjectivity, because objectivity is philosophically unreachable so fuck trying to be objective. As someone who already did the freshmen-level debate of subjectivity vs. objectivity in journalism in college, the whole thing strikes me as they basically admitting they don't really care about professionalism when it comes to their "reporting" and that they're effectively a feels and opinions publication with a dash of actual reporting on the side. They're there to cater to the people that already like their opinions, and essentially telling anyone who doesn't that they don't care because "oh, this is all subjective."

God fucking dammnit I'm so tired of the hipster nature of the indie journo scene. Half of them are basically blogs with multiple writers at this point, for how much anyone actually tries to be a professional at their job. I used to read Kotaku when it basically did the same thing, and now I won't go near it with a 10 foot pole. Everyone thinks their opinion is so fucking cool that it stands on its own, no need for facts or actual reporting. Just read the press release and then go on for 4 paragraphs about what you think, rather than what is.

Anyone got a suggestion for an indie games journo site that still manages to not be completely self-absorbed in its own bullshit?

In a way. He doesn't realize the weight class he's in when he makes reactionary comments, and there's every chance that this is only going to get worse unless he figures out that his actions will have several unintended consequences because of his influence.
