The former co-worker that used to poison my drink cup with cleaning solutions, and repeatedly steal from the storage room has been re-hired.

Now I'm starting to fall back into fucking hypervigilance every time I'm near him, because he's pychotic and I know he carries a knife on him, even though we aren't allowed to at work.

... why in the name of zeus would they re-hire someone that does that? Does whoever does the hiring not know?

Bust his ass for the knife. Take a picture of him stealing. Get a boss' case about him.

He's one of those people who's charasmatic with managers, so they'll never believe he can do something like that.

Why was he let go in the first place?

Why wasn't he arrested in the first place? Putting cleaning solutions in your drink is basically attempted homicide.

Probably because putting him in jail was of less concern than staying fed. Maybe also evidence, but calling the cops on a fellow worker, when the management isn't against them? That's a real fast way to get your arse fired. Poisoned cups can be avoided, several months of unemployment as a results of doing something about the poisoner less so. M'fairly sure if MC had the fiscal stability to be able to afford to do something like that, he'd probably be in another part of the country or somethin'.

Frumple is, unfortunately, correct. When I was assaulted by a coworker in a previous job and tried to report it, my boss gave me two options: I could pursue my complaint, which would likely cause us both to lose our jobs, or I could shut up and we'd both get to keep them.

I was in a similar situation once. Then again, I also retorted that since workplace violence was totally kosher, I would ask my temp agency to change the handbook to include beatings. He was promptly fired, and I was assigned elsewhere. Factory work did not agree with me, it seems.

Why was he let go in the first place?
He wasn't. He quit, saying that he "couldn't handle anyone's bullshit anymore" and refering to three of the managers (including the one that rehired him) as "bitches".

In other words, I have no idea why he's here again, I honestly thought he was in jail.

And yeah, everything that Frumple said is why I never reported it.

Is it possible for you to ask the manager who hired him why he was hired at all?
...That case looks ridiculous...but for lack of a word describing my surprise(?)

And that precludes going straight to the police with it as well?

Don't think the cops could have done anything. Besides, I would have lost my job anyway, probably because of some minor error they could use as an excuse. The supervisors there were kinda scumbags.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
