FUCK SOFTWARE ENGINEERING 1. FUCK THIS FUCKING COURSE AND FUCK ITS INCOMPETENT PROFESSOR. I WOULDN'T BE SO WORKED UP ABOUT THIS BUT I HAVE AN EXAM TOMORROW AND I'M STUDYING SO I ACTUALLY HAVE TO ABSORB THIS SHODDY-ASS PIECE OF EDUCATION WHICH WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM IF IT WAS ACTUALLY EDUCATING BUT IT ISN'T. NOTHING AGAINST SOFTWARE ENGINEERING BUT THIS COURSE ISN'T ABOUT SOFTWARE ENGINEERING BUT ABOUT MINUSCULE DETAILS RELEVANT TO SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AND/OR JAVA WHICH NOBODY ACTUALLY NEEDS TO KNOW MUCH LESS MEMORIZE. AS YOU MIGHT HAVE GUESSED, THE EXAM WILL TEST ON EXACTLY THESE MINUSCULE DETAILS; NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS.

I'M LOOKING AT SOME OLD EXAMS HERE AND HALF THE FUCKING POINTS ARE FOR YES/FUCKING/NO QUESTIONS THAT CHANGE THEIR TRUTH VALUE ABOUT FIVE TIMES EACH DEPENDING ON HOW FUCKING NITPICKY YOU DEIGN TO BE, AND THE LEVEL OF NITPICKY ISN'T EVEN REMOTELY CONSISTENT. I WILL LITERALLY BE BETTING MY GRADE ON HOW NITPICKY THE PROFESSOR IS.

HERE'S AN EXAMPLE: IN THE JAVA JUNIT TEST EXAMPLE <SNIP>, CAN YOU REPLACE assertEquals(a, b) WITH assert(a.equals(b))? DID YOU GUESS NO BECAUSE A COULD BE NULL? DID YOU GUESS YES BECAUSE YOU READ THE FUCKING CODE EXAMPLE AND A LITERALLY CANNOT EVER BE NULL? WELL YOU GUESSED WRONG BOTH TIMES BECAUSE THE ANSWER IS NO BECAUSE YOU CAN TURN OFF JAVA ASSERTIONS. IT'S A MOTHERFUCKING JUNIT TEST WHY THE MOTHERFUCK WOULD YOU EVER WANT TO TURN OFF JAVA ASSERTIONS WHILE RUNNING A JUNIT TEST THIS IS WHAT I HAVE TO DEAL WITH TOMORROW AND I HATE IT SO MUCH.

September 4th is when my university classes start.

Even that's, iirc, a tad early compared to high school in my school board.

I'm back on the third. All of the first-year students get to wait a bit longer.

No idea of when my sisters go back. One of them is going to be homeschooled, and I haven't the faintest idea of how that works, but I know that the school she was going to is just too shit to have her keep going back. The speech-therapy that they made her attend has actually managed to make her impediment worse.

I'm going back to school on September 2nd if I'm not mistaken (since the 1st is the beginning of school and all).

I don't want to though. ;~;
(I kind of hate school, if only because I'm godawfully lazy and not all that social.)

Basement is freezing. I have been keeping the door to my room closed over to keep the warmth from escaping.

Mom came in without even knocking, wanting me to show her my school schedule. I showed her, and she made notes of all the class times. She then asked that I show her my bank account. I told her that she is being nosy, and she said that she wasn't being nosy, and that it is her business to know what's in my bank.

"How else are you supposed to get rich without me monitoring your account?"

Luckily, the website recognized that this isn't the computer I normally use to visit the bank site and it asked me for a security question. Only need to fail one question to get the computer locked out of the site.

Classes at my college start August 25. The local gradeschools are already in session, if the busloads of kids are anything to go by.

Also, mild bit of rage - so in my area, we use the ACT for college admissions and such. The ACT is given in your Junior year, for free. You can retake it just about as much as you want (there's a limit, but I think it's like... 12 times?), but it's $80 every time beyond your first (or for some people, second - there's something that lets you take it in the seventh grade - with the horrifying (in terms of school system quality) result that some seventh-graders do better on it than a lot of Juniors). Here's the issue - you've got a whole year of classes after you take it - and by our school system, that means another year of math and english, and maybe another year of science if you're a nerd or an idiot who somehow hasn't had their 3 science credits yet.

The ACT score, besides admissions, also determines what classes you can skip and still claim that you got credit for, and what the maximum level of class you can have is. I'm going to be taking precalculus. Again. Which is a level below where I should be starting for my major, most classes of which have some level of calculus (of 3) as a requirement. Because my Mathematics ACT subscore, from before I took precalculus was 1 point below the minimum, if I recall correctly.

Also, college book prices. What the hell.

This really belongs on the terror-thread but it's semi-relevant to the current discussion.

While trying to double check the date my school starts back up, I found out that the math teacher I almost had this year got arrested over the summer for possession of child porn and raping one of his students. So yeah. I narrowly made not having a pedophile for a teacher.

Does she get advice from scams now too? That sounds like a very suspicious way to see someone's money.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Any chance the college will let you test out of the class?

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Manager decides that we should start taking lunch orders a bit early and then fucking disappears. The friars weren't up to temperature, the fry dispenser wasn't stocked, the kitchen hadn't even started any lunch items. And the preshift crew hadn't stocked anything either, so I was having to grab armfuls of crap out of the freezer every time I turned around. So there was a 40-minute wait while everybody ran around getting shit set up as fast as possible with no direction. And I took the brunt of the complaints, just because I was the fucker standing at the window.

If you haven't already, check online. Used, rentals, ebook (Legit or otherwise, and providing your class is cool with an ebook -- check with the teacher, make no mention of source if sketchy), whatever. Also potentially check with the teach to make sure older editions won't work the class -- sometimes they do, and they're likely to be cheaper than whatever the class is using. Do not buy from the college or local bookstore(s) unless you have absolutely no other option. They are almost certainly ripping you off to a massive degree, comparatively.

E: Though you're probably still going to be dropping at least a couple hundred. S'just less likely to be several hundred.

Well I mean, even if you were meant to have him as a teacher I suspect that would not be the case any more.

Classes here for K-12 are legally banned from starting before Labor Day. Of course, they always start the day after. I think it's similar for college, but I'm not sure if it's a legal mandate or just standard practice.
