I don't agree. I use it all the time, and hear it used all the time. It's an alternate version of while, both can be used.

I took that description of "whilst" verbatim from my English professor. Then again, I went to Community College, too. *shrug*

Clogged ears maaay be accompanied by infection, by the by. If you can't do something about it at home, you might want to schedule a quick doctor's appointment. They probably won't do anything but power wash your ear out quicklike and check for bleeding/infection/whatever, but it might be better safe than sorry. Especially if your friends/family/etc. have no idea how to deal with such.

Well, it probably wouldn't emit any light, and would probably gobble up light...

So it'd be black.

And probably blurry sides to the tear as well, as some of that light but not all is absorbed.

So basically it'd be a fuzzy black patch suspended in space.
