Blame the lack of strategy games recently on my inability to remember them before =\

It's actually funny (to me at least) that the majority of the games I play either require a lot of mental effort (sins of a solar empire, Don't starve, X-com games, other strategy games, mostly) or things that require absolutely no thought at all (Rag Doll Kung Fu, Guacamelee, One Finger Death Punch, Nidhogg...).

I don't have a whole lot of middle grounds.

I tried sins of a solar empire once

the tutorial was too boring

will try again in 20 or 30 years when I'm feeling like playing retro games

Oh god yes the tutorial sucks ass.

Honestly I just started playing the actual game and figured stuff out on my own.

I won the first game by doing nothing but making money and spending all of it on placing a bounty on my enemies and watching the pirates rip them apart because the pirates are OP.

Don't most puzzle games and competitive non-twitch games require mental effort?
...kay, I totally forgot about these.

Sins of a Solar Empire is great if you wanna watch close-up as spaceships blow each other up.

As an actual strategy game it always tends to be either too simplistic or unplayably complicated.

Turns out, RTS and 4X do not mesh really well together. Who would have thought?

4X games have always confused me. What separates them from a normal strategy game?

Strategy games focus at least as much on the army fights as the bases building, and tend to be contained enough to finish a player v player game in less than an hour.

4x games focus on building an elaborate empire.  They'll have an expansive research tree as well as mechanics for colonizing planets/building cities and then expanding those planets/cities.  They are typically designed as large time sinks, with most games lasting over 10 hours.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

As opposed to, say, 10-45 minutes or whathaveyou. Per individual map-equivalent, lsp.

I think he might be saying most 4X games last significantly longer than 10 hours? I'm not completely sure.

Hrrg... played PBEM, sure (Months D:). Or specifically set up to go long (largest map, marathon-equivalent settings, etc.). Otherwise I'd say 10 hours or less is a good ballpark for a single start to victory session for someone that has a general idea of what they're doing and is actually trying to win (without just outright blitzing things). S'about the top off point for most of my goes, anyway, and I usually play notably slower than necessary.

From what I understand, 4X games are usually crammed with mandatory micromanagement on epic scale, which is the main reason why they have an average game length so high.

Dominions? yep. Aurora? yep. Galactic Civilizations? yep.
and so on.
