So what is DF here? Pull lever, receive magma?

The mouse was a noble who requested one too many slade hamster balls.

In DF you are the person peforming the experiment instead of the rat.

DF is a lever with a lot of littler levers sticking off of it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's, in some form or fashion, game design broken down to the simple and excruciatingly simplifying something I'm not an expert in and will never claim to be in expert in.

In a whole, I see it as something to take basic notes on. When to give points, how much points, what should tree punching reward, should you have powerups and if so, how many and what do they do? If someone doesn't follow it, so be it, however there's always some fundamental sameness in games.

That is my two cents anyway :3

EDIT: I put skinner box as an example. No insults are to be implied :3

I just now realized what that could imply.

Not insinuating all games are simply pull lever = reward.
Chess doesn't seem to align to that scheme...

Go (the game), also doesn't really work like that.

Basic game design would be more like planning the decision-space and it's evolution over time, making rewards proportional to time invested, and something like that.
Game designer should always remember that the only real resource the player invests in them is time.

Yeah.

I kind of used the skinner box as an example because, in my opinion it represented some form of action = reward, even if it doesn't mean that in practice for most games.

Though, don't take my word as final as I am but a person trying to sound intellectual :P

First Douglas Adams, now Alfred Hitchcock as well.

I think the Man Upstairs are getting some dead authors to be his replacement.

Have to take dog in for surgery to remove not-so-benign growth on her paw.

Until then, we have to keep her from chewing on it.

Augh.

....
(Am I talking about my dog too much?)
No, you're not and best of luck with all that.

Haven't seen video games requiring serious mental effort, with the exceptions of chess/go and the likes.

Repetitive things kill motivation really fast, though. Take the same amount of time with no new gains? Bad design.

Dwarf Fortress.
It's not mental effort, it's mental enjoyment.

Don't most puzzle games and competitive non-twitch games require mental effort?
