I use a visa bank card.

It processes like visa, but is tied to a bank account, and debits the funds therein. Working second shift and living far away from the civic center makes getting to the bank difficult, using ATMs comes with added fees, and my employer insists on automatically depositing my paycheck.

As such, I go and get cash when I feel cash is appropriate-- (Vacations and the like) but otherwise use a combination of my bank card and a reloadable greedot card.

Cash is preferable, but banks don't keep hours for a world that doesn't sleep.

I only got a credit card once I decided to travel abroad, because so many places hate traveler's checks these days.

I could get a credit card, but I'm wary - I don't actually need one. Most things I pay with cash anyway.

I can easily see my niece inheriting my sister's debt, many years from now (I hope) when she dies.
Just to note, you cannot inherent debt under normal circumstances in America. If your sister's estate is worth less than her overall debt your niece (and everyone else) will lose any inheritance, but she won't actually get debt even if it isn't paid off.

Generally true, but not in the case of co-signing a loan.

As for credit cards, I have one but don't remember the last time I actually used it.  Maybe 5 years ago or so.  I keep it locked at home.  Pay cash for everything.

No, I don't live out in the boonies, either.
As I said, under normal circumstances. I highly doubt a two-year old is co-signing a loan.

Last night I asked a couple friends to come over to my house and play video games today. They agreed, so I made some plans for dinner here tonight as well.

Today they told me they're not willing to make the drive to my house. So I either let them ditch me or I ditch my roommates for dinner. Sigh.

More likely they thought (when you initially asked) something like, "Hey, yeah, that'd be fun!" without actually considering the mechanics of it.  :-X

Still, the method they employed to get out of it is pretty shitty.

They SHOULD have come, even if it was costly or inconvenient, then mentioned next time they are asked that the drive was longer than they expected, or something similar.

Refusal to show up after you have agreed to come is simply shitty-- The person they were going to go and see may have bought stuff specifically for entertaining company, that now wont be used, and will instead only psychologically torment the person who bought them. (assuming they are susceptible anyway.)

There comes a point with such things that you decide on a set of principles, and act on them, even when those principles are inconvenient. In olden days, this was called having "Integrity."

Maybe I'm just too old-fashioned?

[Seriously, my best friend lives a 6 HOUR drive away, IN ANOTHER STATE. If he asks me to come and visit, and I say YES, *I COME VISIT.* ]

@wierd

Yes. That is how these things are done. Inconvenience is no excuse - there are plenty of things that are, but they all pretty much have to revolve around another obligation you have unexpectedly turning out to be more important.

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Yes, exactly. Those are the situations where your other obligations have to take priority - usually to others, but not necessarily. Terrible, yet non-communicable, disease would be fine, for instance, but convenience just doesn't make the cut for "obligation".

My mom's scanner/printer/fax machine is a piece of shit.

Normally I'd be complaining about my mom's incompetence at using it, but this time it's actually the machine's fault.

Apparently if it detects an issue, any issue, it completely locks up. This includes it being low on ink. No button will function, other than the off button. You don't need ink to scan things. This is bullshit. I can't even use the menu or the settings buttons.

It has been my experience, (over 20+ years as a tech head) that multifunction devices are premium shit-- regardless of who makes them.

All you have to do is try to fix one, and you will know for life from then on never to buy another.

There is something to be said about having discrete devices-- If one breaks, you dont have to buy 3 or 4 other devices as well. You DO when you have to replace a multifunction device.

There's actually a pretty good reason for that. The printhead attempts to draw in ink even if the cartridge is empty (which, in some cases is actually still 40% full,) and if a printhead draws in air, it can warp it, causing it to be misaligned foreverafter.
