*is at a loss why anyone would be embarrassed by reading Asimov*
It's probably more to prevent "Ooh, what'cha readin'?" "Asimov." "What are you, some kind of nerd?"
A more likely response would probably be "Who?".

Does that even happen outside of TV-land?
Maybe, though not to someone with as much musculature as MZ.

The proper response to such a question is, "Wait, what are you doing? Get back to work, peon number four. I'm busy being smarter than you and therefore more important."

While yesterday was quite nice, meeting up with all my uni friends and reenrolling for next year, the cycle home most assuredly was not.

  • Sailors on shore leave all over Melbourne Wharf. I think. They were respectful and polite and got out of the way of the oncoming cyclists (It's a common route taken by cyclists travelling from Footscray into the South East). That's not the bad part.
  • Drunken girlfriends of said sailors walking and darting in and out of the bicycle lane, that is clearly signed BICYCLES ONLY. Cyclists usually average about 30km/h there, and there's a clear split between the bike lane and the footpath, which is itself three times the width of both bike lanes combined, yet they felt the need to walk there. They ignored my bell, and every other cyclist ahead of and behind me.
  • Some bogan girl with bleached hair and orange skin, with her roided up boyfriend who changed direction, walking through a bike lane near the Exhibition Centre, again, clearly marked BICYCLES ONLY. I slammed on my brakes, and i'm glad that they're v-brakes that actually work well. Both brakes went on, but I went up on one wheel and teetered for a second before regaining my balance. Other cyclists behind me followed suit quickly. Bogan girl screeched "ya fucking ranga cunt" and her roided up boyfriend said nothing but appeared pissed off. Gee, I'm sorry, would you have preferred me to run you down?
  • 50m on from that, bunch of shoppers walking in the narrow bike lane. Bell didn't do shit. One of them decided to choose that exact moment to scream as shrilly as she could when me and two other cyclists were passing, just out of bloodymindedness - she clearly knew we were there and didn't want to move. Naturally, we got startled. I shouted back "See where it says BIKE LANE? it's clearly signed."
  • 25m on from that, a bunch of thick-necked 15 year olds shouted "NOICE FAKKIN BIKE RANGA CUNT". Ugh. I don't usually get that sort of crap in the city, so why yesterday?

Just what I was about to say. Anyone who knows who Asimov is in this day and age is already pretty nerdy.  :P

On the contrary; anyone who doesn't know who Asimov is, or at least is familiar with themes from his work, in this day and age is either young or a backwards hick. His work suffuses any sort of modern culture regarding technology, and robotics in particular. Especially his 3 laws of robotics.

Also, "nerdy" is an ancient stereotype left over from half a century ago; today, we call that "normal" or "functional."

Yep.

Furries, I just run them through my 'Don't bother' list until I feel a need to bother them :P

EDIT: Me and Fallout New Vegas have a love hate relationship. On one hand, it's a more enjoyable base game then Fallout 3.

On the other hand, it crashes at least once every session.

In case it wasn't clear, I was being facetious. I cut my milk teeth on Asimov, and it's a damned shame that so little shelf space is devoted to him in bookstores and libraries. Though that's another issue altogether. Heinlein gets the same treatment.

I need to stop before I go into full rant mode about how much I hate brick&mortar bookstores--chain ones, at any rate.

Guise. I just don't like reading in front of other people, and I didn't want to walk to the empty seats because I don't know.

Is "ranga cunt" a staple insult in Australia, or is it just reserved for people on bikes? What does it even mean?

My stepdad's opinion on my ladyfriend: "You should* be making new friends, and get out of the house more."

*Meaning that meeting this girl was proper course of action for his suggestion.
He says this as I am getting ready to leave the house for several hours.
