One of my favorite video-game romances in any rpg is definitely Ashley's romance in ME1

Because instead of being infatuation-exageratting-characteristics-then-sex, it was a romance, filled with conversations, and musings, turbulence, and a decent payoff. I heard Jack's romance was in much the same vein as ashley's.

I'd have to agree with BDthemag regarding LGBT relationships (at least in mass effect). Liara/Femshep romance is horribly drooooooll

People need to stop separating LGBT romance plots and normal romance plots. A badly written romance plot is a badly written romance plot. They're not advancing anything by making a poor representation of gay romance, they're just setting things back. Either learn how to do it properly without it being "Talk to this character you like the most, and they'll have sex with you!" levels of badness, or don't do it at all.

I'll still take bad gay romance, over overtly pretending homosexual romance doesn't exist. It's a step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned.
If you're setting a precedent you set it straight and proper [pun?] or else you could just end up killing it before it's properly been given a chance to be born. If you have the choice of rotten eggs or no eggs, which would you rather have? The absence of something does not mean it is actually absent or ignored. Because again, most game developers are not prepared for Romance of any sort better than LCS pick-up lines. Writing any couple in and making it relevant to the story is important. Otherwise you end up with these awkward, broken cudboard cut outs:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They're doing things like picnics that means they're in love! Lovers have picnics! I'mdoinitrightguys?

Quite so. Get someone who can write understanding the male or female mindset, know what effects an attraction to the same mindset would be and work with it. Generally you shouldn't be going from the start; "You will be Romance character A, you will be Tsundere Romance character B, you will be etc..." You start with a character, work with that character's actions and build on its depths not its most superficial features. Ok, well that last bit is personal preference. But you should definitely at least bloody try, it's not excuse to be a sorry excuse.

I had a romance with Kelly in ME2, (as FemShep) and I thought it was pretty good. I don't know if it was actually a "romantic" romance, though. It was more like playful flirting leading to actual flirting leading to sleeping together. At least it wasn't Metro: LL where the "romance" is just a sudden "take me now!" from the only female character in the entire series. I was so hoping that it wouldn't turn into sex, but nope, she just had to show Artyom her nipples.

"The game exists in the universe of the novel, Metro 2033, and its sequels, written by Russian author, Dmitry Glukhovsky, but does not follow any direct storylines from the books. Previously announced as Metro 2034, the game is a sequel to Metro 2033, and although Glukhovsky has apparently been working with the developers, it bears no relation to the book Metro 2034."
Everything explained by wikipedia in a nutshell. Perhaps writers should be replaced by authors...

Are you sure you're not separating LGBT romance and normal romance? I don't think I'd ever see anyone saying the idea of straight romance is getting "set back" by bad plots.

There'll be equality when gay romances are everywhere and done in every quality. I want gay 50 Shades of Grey and gay Great Gatsby. I get that a lot of people are just against romance done poorly in general, but I think LGBT romance gets unfairly spotlighted when it's not done well.

Straight romance isn't get set back, because there's already a clear public acceptance of it. LGBT romance however, isn't necessarily commonplace. Depending where you live, it can be anywhere from common to very rare. I was more or less saying that a bad LGBT romance plot was doing nothing to advance the acceptance, and was at the most setting it back due to making it just look like two people flirting for a period of time, culminating in sex.

And while I agree with you that the only way there will be equality, is if it's common enough to warrant varying degrees of quality. But you can't start making it more common and accepted in a certain medium by making it terribly. It'll just make gamers gravitate towards not wanting any kind of romance plot, because they're sick of people doing it terribly and shoving it down their throats. There also shouldn't be a "Gay Great Gatsby" or a "Gay 50 Shades of Gray" (Since I'm pretty sure there are already multiple pieces of work very similar to the latter that are gay.) The book or piece of literature in question should just be good in general, and just so happen to involve LGBT relations/characters.

Something being progressive doesn't excuse it for being bad, and we shouldn't purposely look past the flaws of a piece of work just because it represents a good cause. A piece of shit is a piece of shit.

I dunno. From what I hear, the homosexual romance with Anders is the deepest one and the one where he gets the most character development. I don't think he even talks about his relationship to Brainwashed Dude at the Beginning in the straight path.

Of course, this was in a game where both characters and character development were inch-deep, so it's not saying much. But let's not mix up Bioware's honest attempts at inclusion with EAs pandering to the demographic. There's quite a bit of difference between Anders and "Gay Sex Planet".

Why is everyone getting into a kerfluffle and trying to tell me how to spend my money?  I like these games and I feel that, given my life experiences, they're pretty frigging empowering.  Therefore I am spending money on them and happily allowing EA to collect my data.  Maybe they'll make more dark-skinned female headshot champions in the future.  I also don't mind them knowing that I watched that last scene with Mordin like three times.  Maybe they'll get the message this time.

The whole gay planet thing is infuriating.  But Cortez happening to have a deceased husband he's having trouble getting over really isn't, and given that many female characters would be given just that motivation and no other character development without anyone batting an eye, I'm glad.  He's a side character!  Let him be a side character.

Now, we are yet to have any straight-up gay squad members, but seriously, I don't feel--personally--like anyone's being shortchanged or that the gay romance options were poorly written.  They're fine.

For the record, the romnces  in baldurs gate 2  were pretty horrid.  Particularily the widow one which starts while her husband's body is still warm.

Never meant to tell you how to spend your money, or what you should enjoy or support. I just get mad at the tendencies of the game-design industry... which is something I'm seeing more of recently, having a bit of a window to the inside as of late. So much of it is smut... not in a porn sense, but it's just... shiny, attractive, but heartless fluff. Copycat creativity and marshmallow art. And it grosses billions doing it.

I'm just irritated about what's encouraged and rewarded within the system, and didn't mean to attack you, or the things you like. I'm sure Mass Effect really is enjoyable. But there's a lot of stuff out there that is successful, while being terrible. And that makes me mad.

That's the problem with game companies getting so huge. They have to start worrying about a reliable source of income to keep up with their growth, and as a result they're less willing to experiment with different game designs than the indy game devs. If AAA groups find a formula that works, they'll stick with it in the name of business.

I've been wondering why my computer has been running a bit slower than usual and using up more RAM than I remember, along with quite a few games I had refusing to work due to a lack of memory available. I tried literally everything in order to get things to work more smoothly, and I just realized why my system is using up more RAM. When re-installing windows 7, I accidentally installed the 32 bit version. So instead of using my full 3 GB of ram, it was only using the maximum of 2 for most games. God, I feel so fucking stupid for spending hours trying to troubleshoot all of my problems, just to realize it was so simple and that I'm going to have to re-install Windows 7 on my computer again.
