Ugh, recovering from yesterday. It feels like I woke up with a bad hangover, only I've been drinking INFINITE RAGE.

Wolfeyez managed to pull down the ICE ransomware. Hitmanpro did not fix it. I could not find the files in Ubuntu and clamav didn't fix it either. FUUUUUU

Ugh, I slept for four hours or so last night.

I was expecting myself to wake up at 1PM, not 8AM.

I feel your pain. It's 10 times worst when you are fixing someone else's blunder too.

Dear god, you guys should stop googling hairy russian porn :P

Try booting into safemode and then downloading:
1. Rkill to kill any possible virus processes
2. Malwarbytes because MBAM is the best AV and will pick up anything.

(Note: I am by no means an expert, but that seems to be the way you get rid of most ransomware or most malware in general and I watch too many videos on malware.)
(For examples, look at the latest videos of this guy: rogueamp)

Last I checked, safe mode was still locked, too, but I can give it another try.

What files did you look for? Its files seem to be scattered in random and insignificant places with names like .lnk, lass.lnk, and ctfmon.lnk.

... Well, that's not good. I've never actually seen a video on this, so I guess now you'd be best off using Hiren's Boot CD or something like that.

Totally forgot about Hiren's Boot CD. Will give that a shot. Thanks, bro.

Most of the time, I was just looking for suspicious dlls and lnks. Honestly, Ubuntu's new Mac-clone environment frustrated me so much that I probably missed something. (Yes, I know that MacOS is a Unix clone. It still pisses me off.)

You might try Backtrack, if only because it's a readily available OS based on Ubuntu 10.04, prior to the Unity interface getting pushed. Though apparently Backtrack's been superseded by Kali, which I've no experience with.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Combofix will remove anything. Though your computer will probably be left with PTSD afterwards... I have had what at best can only be called "mixed results" using it. 100% of viruses removed, and on occasion along with this 100% of OS, or registry, or installed software...

If you're somewhat computer savvy, combofix is supposed to be very good for removing viruses.

Thing is, you do it wrong, it can apparently screw your computer over.
it has done it before, i done it once on a system, corrupted the whole shadow file system, had to reinstall it then :P.

ICE ransomware
1. download Emsisoft Emergency Kit http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/eek/
2. boot to safe mode command prompt
3. start only explorer.exe
4. go into msconfig and set everything to boot to microsoft services and no startups
5. check the start menu startup folder for anything else
6. reboot to safe mode with networking
7. run FULL scan

They never break-in. They're specifically designed to resist breaking in as long as possible, to retain their shape.

Doesn't always work. some particulary nasty ones hitch a ride on explorer.exe.
