I've reached the point where I hate TV (and mainstream ad-supported media in general) with an absolute frothing passion.
Sounds like you hate the internet :P, or at least a large part of it.

Check engine light thing turned out to be not a gas cap problem, but only cost me $100. I say "only" and that's like 1/5 of my funds, but it's a Hell of a lot better than needing a new engine.

The mainstream part is important. Relatively unobtrusive ads I have less trouble with, and if it's done somewhat tastefully I don't mind letting stuff through adblock.

TV ads lost their sense of taste before I was fucking born. And it's indeed more than slightly troublesome that some of their shit is starting to infect the 'net, but I can avoid that crap or block it with little trouble, y'know? Harder when other people are addicted to the noisebox and somewhat hard of hearing, but... whatever.

Yes, I hate a great deal of the ad-supported portions of the internet. My fury towards them has not quite reached infinite and frothing, yet, but they're working at it.

So I got Betty Edwards Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain as a preliminary refresher before I get into more serious instruction. Well the first "exercise" she has you do is draw a person from memory. Now I know I need a lot of work, I'm already painfully aware of my limitations otherwise I wouldn't be trying to get better, but asking a beginner to draw someone from memory is like asking a beginner to play Rachmaninoff. It was frustrating and discouraging to the point I almost gave up. Which is clearly the best way to get students enthusiastic about something.

I'm not going to give up, but I'm generally skeptical about things that make me thoroughly embarrass myself while claiming to be teaching me.

To make a decent sword, first you have to deal with a hundred crap swords. Or something like that, I remember seeing that recently but not who said it. Replace smithing with art.

Yeah, I get that. But your first sword shouldn't be attempting a rapier with an intricate handguard, it should be something simple and more tailored to your skill level. Then when you fail you at least won't have failed so miserably as to be unable to see how you'll ever get better.

It also helps to know which features of the face are essential for individual identity and which are needed for just making an anatomical human face.

Experience helps, but knowledge is good too.  I've been told that information before, but I can never seem to recall it.  But it's out there somewhere.

edit: in other words, your instructor really should have let you know which features to watch out for.

edit edit: unless her goal is actually to "break you down" before building you back up.  Drawing and art is 110% observation, so introducing people to the idea that their ability to observe is weaker then they expect could help them... learn to observe more.

Job websites have shown me the "careers" that shitty retail slaves would scoff at. Also the national guard. I think half the jobs on this site are from the national guard. I am not joining the national guard
