Well, they can't trick you into improbably incriminating yourself if you aren't around them.

Aaand that's just the info that I need. Many thanks, Xant.

Also, if his "investigations" are full of shit then the threat of bringing the cops into the mess probably are too, so chill your head, Desc.

No problem, Darvi. If you plan to kill me, it won't forestall my return, though. Just telling you.

MSH, your advice regarding the police really seems like it'll just amount to antagonise them rather than helping.

In the US it is excellent advice, I have no idea of its validity in Canada. Talking to the police in the US never helps you. Indeed, legally it can only hurt you.

I was at wrestling practice yesterday, and I took this black kid down (I weigh 182lbs, he is 220lbs(!), and it only serves to irritate the hell out of me because he sucks), so now we're on the ground and I'm kicking his ass. I have long hair. It comes down into my eyes and past my ears and I love it oh so much <3. Some other guy who was still fighting for hand control while standing up steps on my bangs, and they are promptly torn out when I sit back and put in my half-nelson. I freak the fuck out internally at what he's done and all the short-haired fucks in the room chuckle once they see it and go back to their business. Now I have to look ridiculous with my fucked up hair until I can go to the barber and get it all evened out, which promptly sets me back to square one. It took a long time to finally find a hairstyle that worked for me and get it to look good. The worst part is that the guy who stomped my hair is angry with me for getting in his way during a practice match. *facepalm*

Oh and while I'm on that topic, the entire Biology class cracked up when someone mispronounced 'Organism' that one time.
My latin class cracked up the first time we were introduced to "cum". Also Pinus. Pine tree.
That's nothing. We have to translate this text. One of the main characters is called "Pisanus" with his last name.

Talking to the police if you are officially a suspect of a crime, without a lawyer present, is never, ever a good idea in the US.

If you're a witness, or the person who called them, sure, talk away! You might help solve a crime. But if you're the suspect? There is literally nothing you can say (to the police you are initially likely to encounter, anyway) that will make you less of a suspect, and a hell of a lot that can make you more of one.

And even when you get to a situation where talking CAN make you less of a suspect, the average person is unlikely to be prepared to do so. Which is why lawyers are provided to offer advice about what they should say.

There is a reason why they tell you that anything you say right then and there can be used against you. You shush, wait for a lawyer, and it works out much better. (or at least less terribly).

They actually don't tell you that unless they're interrogating you, but it's true all the time.

Yeah, this has been chimed in on before. In the states, it is literally impossible, legally, for a police officer to give a good word for you in court -- anything that benefits you, as a suspect, is considered hearsay and basically inadmissible, iirc. However, anything that incriminates you or negatively effects your case, is considered admissible. As Aklyon says, there's a reason the wording on the miranda rights goes, "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." A cop's word literally cannot be used for you, if it goes to court.

So I'd be pretty damn careful about saying anything unless you've got some good blackmail on someone important or some pretty serious pull in your area. Chances are better than not it won't do anything good for you. Doesn't mean you have to be rude, per se, but you want to be really, really careful with your words.
