So are we talking about genetic modification being as because it might cross pollinate and destroy the worlds food crops, bad because it is a crime against nature, or bad because you REALLY hated vegetables as a kid?

A big part of modifying food items (both with complicated lab procedures and good old-fashioned cross breeding) is increasing how much food you can produce. Corn, as Hanslanda mentioned, used to be tiny nearly-inedible lumps. Now a single cob can fill a good portion of your stomach.

When I was a kid, one of the only vegetables I liked was Broccoli. My parents were shocked, to say the least.

And also very angry, because I utterly refused and continue to refuse to eat any and all lettuce. That stuff is horrific and vile.

Yeah. If it was, I dunno, working towards sentient food that propels itself around the room and performs simple tasks for you before you devour it, that'd be kinda cool.
As it is it's just quicker-growing crops that cause worse health problems. Meh.
