Fellow caveat'd "hard enough" :P

Presumably to get the richochet effect. Chunking a brick is easy enough, getting it to bounce would probably entail being able to throw hard enough to pulp the skull of the first target and then hit the... floor, probably (most other things in your average school classroom a brick moving that fast would just go through, if the brick maintains cohesion), and then bounce up and get someone else, despite bleeding off a lot in the initial impact. Enough force for the bloody thing to bounce at all, nevermind going through the first cranium, would be pretty difficult to get a hold of from simple human force application.

This sounds like a job for XKCD What-If?

Kitchen fire story: My mother was sitting in front of the computer in the front of the house, I walk up, very calm, and say: "Mum, the oven's on fire." I was so casual about it that she didn't believe me at first, thinking I was joking or something, but then she follows me out there, sees a bit of smoke, nothing too bad. She opens up the oven and FWOOSH fire spews out.

It's just lucky that I didn't try chucking water on it, since I later discovered it was caused by a tray of grease from the previous night's cooking that I'd neglected to take out when I put my pizza slices on. Whoops.
The oven was screwed and my pizza was burnt. :-\

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

What makes me rage right now is my inability to sprite. I really want to do it, but using my touchpad is so unwieldy and awkward. I attempt to place a few pixels, misclick several times, select the wrong tool, and then finally select the right tool I need before misclicking again. Really frustrating...
EDIT: And, for clarification, all of the USB ports on my laptop are broken, so I'm unable to use anything but the touchpad.

So... started the new shift today...

No longer working under that manager I was complaining about.  She came in when my old manager, who is generally much more relaxed and speaks independently and sincerely instead of being a corporate policy audiobook, switched to a different shift.  Now I'm working under that old manager again.

So I focus throughout the day.  Don't even listen to music until towards the end of the day.  I put out good numbers.  The team beats its productivity goal by a significant margin.  Less than an hour before the end of my shift, I decide to let my guard down a bit and let a simple image slideshow play from my digital art collection.  It's no different from the people who have a digital picture frame on their desk, right?  I stop on an Assassin's Creed production image, showing the low poly distribution on some character models.  I study that image for a little over a minute.  New team lead reports me.  I get talked to.

That right there is reason enough to go all Rage Guy.

My pet rage for the last few days has been, as stupid as it sounds, a public healthcare IT project I'm not even involved in.
A major public hospital in Finland is going to get an Electronic Patient Register, which would be all well and good, except...
The solution they're likely to adopt is likely to be written in a lovely little thing called MUMPS, a hospital/lab application language developed in the 60's.
How bad is it, you ask?

Well, this is what Maths looks like to MUMPS:
Code: [Select]
3*2+1=7Okay, so far, so good.
Code: [Select]
1+2*3=9Wait, what?
Code: [Select]
9+"banana"=TRUEWhere is your logic now, little man?

The rest of the syntax isn't any better. Basically, it's a bunch of single-letter command abbreviations (case-sensitive) and functionally significant formatting (e.g. default scope of a FOR clause is until end of line, a double space is functionally different than a single space, ...)
Most bizarrely of all, in case the above code sample didn't make it clear, there are no data type checks of any kind, anywhere. You can actually add the character string "banana" to the integer 9 and use that as a truth value for an IF clause. (If it's >0, it counts as TRUE.) Or you could go totally wild and e(X)ecute the variable contents as if they were a part of the program code. Oh, and there's no variable declaration or scope either, so good luck keeping track of your x:s and n:s.

How could anything possibly go wrong there?  ::)

Seriously, how could any reasonable human being come up with something as brain-damaged as this and consider actually using it in any non-joke fashion a good thing?! It's basically an affront to every known sound practice and convention in programming and Maths!

It is ironic, that is, entirely fitting that they named it after a disease.

Wait, full stop. I missed something here.

There are people who don't have the strength to throw a brick? Seriously? (Yes, I'm serious.)

I can throw an ashtray big as a really fucking big brick. Does that count?

Spent all week on this 3D model... I think I have to admit to myself that the concept I chose to base my model off of has a few physical impossibilities and can't be modeled without more reference.  *sigh*

edit: then it glitched up a section I spent 20 minutes on, undo button refused to undo the disaster, maya crashed... and now my file is gone ._.

edit: ogodogodogod I found my file again and it's intact.  Sucks about that one section though, no time to re-do it.  Just gotta put a place holder and move on.

Why do they use such an old coding language?

Why do they use such an old coding language?

old isn't necessarily bad. They probably use it because the system they are working with was started decades ago.

The question is why are they using such a HORRIBLE language. They should scrap the whole thing and start fresh, from the ground up.

Did you read the description of the language? Fortran is cake compared to that.
