On topic, I actually don't get a lot of the hate that the WBC gets. I mean, they're horrible people and all, but pretty much any other group that's just as bad doesn't elicit nearly the same reaction.

I mean, if you mention the KKK then people will be like "Yeah, they're jerks" and probably make fun of them a bit. You don't get "Oh lord the KKK. I hate those guys so much that even mentioning their names gets me angry. They're the worst kind of people in the world and truly deserve to rot in hell." Yet WBC gets that response all the time at just a drop of their name.

I think a lot of that is because they targeted the military.  It's ok to think the military budget is too large, but any other sentiment towards the military that isn't "support the troops" tends to be met with severe hatred.

Part of it is probably that the WBC is a lot "fresher" in the public mind. That, and their little hate-circlejerks are still given attention.

Also, what SalmonGod said about them going after military dead. That's one thing that'll get the vast majority of people to overcome other differences for the pleasure of discussing how much they hate you.
