It's the fruit of the Tree of Fail, which doth grow in the Disappointment Fields.

Yeah, I've been playing too much Diablo 3. That's (mostly) not a backhanded comment the game.

This article has inspired me:

1. Yahoo is the best, unbiased news source ever;
2. I can solve world hunger.

The starving should just go eat some food, stupid starving people.

Bread? Fuck bread, give them cake. Bitches love cake.

That brings more WTF to me than RAEG. I don't understand how they could possibly make a Battleship game into an FPS game -_______________________________________-

They made a rather simple board game into a movie. Obviously they posses some sort of media transmogrifier.

Exactly. The movie alone even existing brought my rage meter up a bit, but this is too much.

Quite true, the existence of such a movie adaptation of a simplistic board game is enough to rage about; though they do have Liam Niesson (spelling on the entire name since I refuse to IMDB it). Also, is it coincidence that Battleship comes out IMMEDIATELY after "The Grey" hits DVD in the US? I think not! Clever clever... I know that he was in some movie/tv spot before "Taken" but I cannot remember where. That was his absolute best movie IMO, and it has gradually gone on a roller coaster since then. Taken -> some random movies -> The A*Team (not a highlight though enjoyable) -> The movie where he got amnesia (may have been earlier than A*Team, dunno) -> more random stuff -> The Grey (watched last night was really good though less action packed then I had hoped) -> Battleship (WTF!?!?!?!!?!?!?!!??!??!!??!?!!??)

With all of the flops that have come from Game->Movie transmogrifications how could they think that Battleship would be a wise choice? Maybe the legacy aspect of it? Maybe because Resident Evil is still making fucking movies? Didn't Silent Hill get a second movie? I don't remember and if so I really hope I never see it... It's almost worse than Comic->Movie adaptations for games to become movies.

I almost cried of happiness when I heard about this.  Then I started raging.

1. It'd be cool to have a non-zero female or PoC presence.  Even just significant others.  Even just background characters.

2. They really don't look like any of the mathematicians I've ever met.  Not even the students.  I'm saying that if you're going to bother having four mathematicians, I expect at least one of them to have a dearly familiar stilted speech pattern, or smears of chalk, or that intense "I'm not actually here right now" stare.  Only one of these people looks like he's been putting in the hours.

Where'd they find all that time to work out and look hot?  Why do the very top mathematicians in the country look like they've barely gotten out of doctoral zone?  Why did the NSA only try to get 4 people to work on P vs. NP?  And if they're prodigies who did their PhDs when they were 12 or whatever, why do they all act like they're socially normalized?  And if they're prodigies... then why so much looking flummoxed and "lol, idk!"  These guys are supposed to be The Best in the country.  The average Berkeley math undergrad acts smarter and more on-top-of it (also much more socially unacceptable) than these guys do.

Where are the blackboards?  Where are the coffee cups?  Where are the chewed fingernails, paunches, and hazy expressions?  I don't know any mathematician who lacks these sorts of things!

This is ridiculous!

3. That's one of the most inane analogies I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of really bad ones in mathematical popularizations.

I realize it's some sort of indie thing, but I've read plays that were both accessible to a general audience and had a distinctively mathematical flavor.  Proof made me feel like the author really "got us."  It had a female mathematician lead and other female characters.  It had the usual rude mathematician/physicist rivalry jokes.  Similarly, Arcadia--same thing.

Primer pretty much featured only two actors, both of whom were male, but even it managed to have a female voice on the phone.

What I'm saying is that I feel like mathematics has developed its own culture, and this movie does not understand the first goddamned part of it.  And we're supposed to be happy about that.

This. This. Oh, god this. What they don't seem to understand is seeing mathematicians accurately portrayed (even if the actual math is not) is what the math geeks who are going to be watching that movie want. We find the accurate, nerdy, chalk-smeared, coffee-cup surrounded, nerds who spend more time staring into space than at anything cool. Numb3rs came pretty close, but didn't quite hit it. I think that this movie found a brilliant target audience and completely missed what that audience wanted.

Yeah, you never seem to get accurate depictions of brainiacs on TV or in movies. I have a bit of a pet peeve for this myself.

Bones is a big one for me since it's something that has wound up on TV a lot when we eat dinner. There's a lot about the show that's unrealistic (such as that 3D holographic viewing board that is something out of frigging Star Trek), but the way brainy characters are depicted in the show bothers me, like the way in which they often completely fail to use basic logic.

Let's take a look at Bones herself. She will at times talk about how your physical appearance shouldn't matter, and that's it doesn't make sense to go around changing it... while being immaculately groomed, and wearing half an inch of Hollywood make up. She also talks with a stilted speech, she uses complex and obscure words, likes to pull out scientific words and commonly obfuscates her speech, but she speaks in a very slow, elegant manner, that makes her sound a little like Queen Elizabeth if she'd gotten a little bit too drunk. For goodness sake, I'd expect someone like her to ramble, to mumble, to rant, to randomly say things that make no sense because you don't have all the pieces of her internal narrative!

There's also the whole idiot ball issue. Bones shows knowledge on a very wide range of subjects, but she apparently doesn't know hundreds of little common knowledge facts that Booth will tell her about in order to prove that he's "street smart". There's also times when Bones, or sometimes even the entire team of brainiacs will start to come up with a very complex solution to a problem, which Booth will solve in a very straightforward, simple, way that anybody could have come up with.

I swear, if the killer's name were scrawled on the wall I'd expect Bones to start analysing out loud the anthropology of the name in order to determine the probably ethnicity so that then they coul- then Booth will cut her off mid-sentence with the address of the killer which he pulled out of a phone book that just happened to be sitting on the table...

Then he would have to explain to her what a phone book is.

It's like someone explained to these people what this kind of person is supposed to be like, and they completely scrambled the message.

So...after three CEOs in a row have fucked up HP five ways from Sunday, they're hurting in terms of sales and market share. How do they fix this?

By laying off 30,000 workers, of course. Because y'know....WE'RE the ones who are really to blame. Not the $150+ million golden parachute package to a guy who embezzled company funds to pay hush money to a former softcore porn actress who he hired and groped. Not the golden parachute to a CEO who wasn't even on the job a full year and did nothing but tank the stock by making OMGWTFBBQ-type moves. Not the current CEO who hasn't done anything other than seem less crazy by comparison and who now has made the "bold" decision to fire off a bunch of people who aren't Chinese.

FUCK YOU HP, AND FUCK YOU CAPITALISM.  >:(  >:(
