Holy crap, why did I not start watching One Punch Man earlier? This is the best thing.
probably figured an autobiography wouldn't be interesting

Concerning statistics: Statistics can be a good subject to learn, but ymmv on its usefulness. Important things to learn include making up statistics on the spot, being able to figure out a general probability for something occurring (such as getting failed if you skip a day of statistics class), being able to figure out a variable number of things happening in a specific order and then understanding what the statistic means (such as "You are probably not ever going to win the lottery so stop playing" sort of things). Gambling is rife with statistics; slots are low odds to payout, the card games are all statistical analysis and memory, roulette is a hard one to play but is doable if you can guess the probability of the spin starting on a certain color/number set.

TL;DR - Statistics makes up an interesting part of everyday life, so it is worth learning if only for the knowledge that these things are out there to make a mockery of your life.

Well roulette is just completely random.  You can't increase your odds of making any money off it unless you do the doubling trick, and I'm pretty sure doing that would a) require you to borrow a lot of money and b) get you kicked out of the casino.

STATS!

Can someone who took a stats class or is taking one explain to me what One Standard Deviation is? T_T Wikipedia and random sites all just state stuff like '63% is within 1 standard deviation' but don't really tell me what it is...

Studying for SAT II Math 2 and learning probability kinda works too!

Stuff like 'the odds of six die being rolled and having at least one 1'... though that isn't much use in most situations.

Standard deviation is the differential of the data.

The dice thing isn't likely to be useful in and of itself, but the process that leads you to it is potentially very useful.  In terms of gambling you could use it to work out the probability you'll get the cards you need by the end of a round, or you can use it to help manage your risks in business for maximum returns.

I can't tell what is the value of a standard deviation :| That's what I needed most. The Wiki only has some kind of circly thing, and how to get it from values, but not its value; nor does it say (by a skimming; I wasn't interested/knowledgeable enough to read the whole thing D: so much maths) how to get a set of data from a standard deviation number.

I think I'm doing this all wrong... Anyways, I ended up just plugging in numbers into the Gaussian function for my data set. This is related to genetic programming.

hold on getting a set of data from a standard deviation? O_o

Thats like asking for mean out of the average.

Well, the standard deviation probably represents the 'length' (me no know correct terminology...) of the bell curve, meaning it theoretically would be able to create a data set. And that's what I did.

...Also, isn't the mean the average? >.> Or do you mean the median?

But that can't be a absolute answer as the deviation is the measurement of variation between data! who the fuck thought of this?

It is pseudorandom. The determining factors in guessing a value/color/value-range are strength of release, previous stopping point, and how fast the roulette wheel is spinning when the ball hits the first time. It is really difficult to come up with a realistic model that will work in all situations but if you just stand and watch the attendant you can get a mental picture of the variables and come up with a guess for the next play. Usually I test by watching for ten or so throws and then playing a color and a number. I also only play minimum bets, since I am generally interested in the science of it and not the money which I consider lost the moment I walk into a casino.

The first few losses suck, but sometimes I am just a number or two off, or I have the right color. Every now and then I get lucky and hit the number and thus the color at the same time. It takes a few hours before my "research funds" run out and then I go home.

It is tiring yet fun work, which reminds me I should plan some time to visit the casinos near me again. Been about a year since I went so should be a good time to get new data :D
