Eh, now that I think on it, I do remember pretty much everyone in junior high being a hateful, rage-filled asshole. High school not so much.

But, the kid that started it and brought his friend over, WAS TWELVE.

I almost hesitate to ask, but how did a 12 year old and 14 year old manage to get to the point where they were able to hurt you at all? Incidentally, 12 is around 6th-7th grade, if I'm remembering correctly.

When I was in first grade, I tore a kid's bead necklace off his neck and told him it was too girly for a boy to wear.

If anything, the younger they are, the more callous they can be. Understanding the full consequences of your actions requires experience.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Yeah. I mean, when I was 4, I set a bird on fire with a magnifying glass. That's kind of a horribly evil thing to have done, now that I think back on it. "What's this going to do to somebody else?" isn't a thought that occurs as often as it should, the younger you are, at least in my experience. More than anything else, in this case, it's an idea about how the world ought to be that the kid has, and the thought never even occurred that anyone could disagree. So what he's thinking is, "This guy's wrong to have long hair, and he knows it! How fucked up is that?"

That's no excuse, obviously, just an attempt to provide insight into the psychology I suspect is at play here (but I could easily be wrong). Kid sounds like a douche.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The twelve year old was the one with the knife. I didn't find his actions frightening so much as a little disturbing. His buddy, on the other hand was the stereotypical redneck, except a lot taller than me. I'm 5'1", he was probably 5'7" or so. I'm only 14, and not in the best of shape, he could have hurt me pretty bad if he wanted to.

Meh, it was a chance encounter at a robotics thing today. I'll probably never see them again, still, RAEG.

My response to 'YOLO', if I were ever to actually hear it, would be 'Exactly.'

Looks like you need some training, bucko. Come see me, and learn that being 5'1" cannot stop you from kicking copious amounts of ass. ^_^

Also: YOLO? Eh, wot is that nonsense?

"You only live once", which is then used as an excuse to go do drugs, have sex, etc. Fuck I hate it so much.
