There's only one really bad thread up there right now, I believe. And it's locked with a nice ban for the jerk who started it.

I thought a money elemental was a suit and tie that assimilates someone.

So it's a suit that wears you?

In Soviet Russia?

It was the one where someone decided it was 2010 and that it would be good to start another fight about danger rooms, right?

I mean, if you want a platform for complete derailment arguments full of ad hominem attacks and poorly put together ethical appeals, I can't think of a better topic.

Before I read the last phrase I assumed the platform you were referring to as xbox.

On that topic, what in the world is the deal with everyone hating consoles? It seems like all I run into is computer gamer elitism whenever I attempt to defend the fact that I play games on a console. Yeah, I'd prefer them on a computer, but I'm damn broke and it's much easier to pay 200 bucks for a console than a grand for a gaming computer with the same life and graphical capabilities.

I REALLY don't want to start a war here, so PM me if you have any strong feelings and can't keep them to yourself, but I just don't understand the sheer hate I get. Plus, I'd miss out on the (admittedly dwindling) couch co-op which is really the only thing the console has up on computers. Minus Trine that is.

You're entitled to your opinion. But on this you're just completely, totally wrong. Spending $1000 on a computer will get you an upgradable system with 2x to 3x the power of any console you can buy right now. And you don't even necessarily need to spend $1k, although if you don't have anything like a decent monitor or peripherals it can cost that much.

But truly. A console is not a replacement for a PC on any level, despite how they're marketed. They have the equivalent of 2002 hardware in them and they're never, ever going to get better. Meanwhile, on a PC, with a little bit of "I care enough about my hobby to learn about it", you can upgrade a tower til the freaking world ends.

If that's elitist, then so be it. But the statement you made implies you don't understand the thing you're raging at.

They're apples and oranges, IMHO (although I'll concede that Microsoft seems to trying to steer development towards the applange, a juicy tart hybird of the two).

I have a PC, a PS2 and a Wii. The Wii has become more of a "Netflix streaming box" of late than a game console, but we still fire up the games from time to time. At some point I'll get Rock Band 3 for it, and it'll get much more love than it does now. I don't begrudge one over the other because they just have different roles.

I'm raging at the people who think they're better than me because I play games on a console. A game is not substantially less fun (for me) when played on a console. This, of course, excludes morrowind. I also enjoy not having the hassle of setting up a server or getting my lazy friend to get his dad in southeast asia to give him the router password so he can port forward and host games with his blazing internet on his computer with many more of every part than it needs.

And yes, I have no monitor, keyboard, or speakers, so it would be rather expensive to get a great computer with a monitor good enough to see the difference between a good graphics card and a great graphics card. I'm planning on getting a gaming computer in May with an $800 budget, but I'll ask the lot of you for help when the time comes. I still maintain that a console is cheaper, especially since I'm a broke college student.

And as I understand it a console is basically a top-end (at the time it was created) graphics card with just enough power in other areas to scrape by. Hence why loading times are abysmal yet the games don't look crap in HD. Just pour a box of salt on that statement if you don't know anything about consoles. May as well make it kosher while you're at it, passover's comin up.

It also excludes just about any title where the game performs significantly different between console or port. Consoles often downsample, well, everything, in order to achieve their target performance. Fewer models on the screen, lower end textures, lots of stuff.

So that for me directly impacts my enjoyment of games on a console. When I played L4D on the console after already having played it on PC....it was freaking awful. Like 1/3rd the zombies you see in PC mode. That has a direct impact on the game for me.

I'm just thinking your anger is misdirected. At least it seems that way to me. You're focusing on the PC/Console part of it when it seems your problem has way more to do with being poor. Which is something I can relate to.

I dropped $1,100 on a pc set up in 2001 after saving up for a long time for it. That same overall PC has stayed with me for over a decade now. It's probably the most solid, reliable investment I've ever made in my life. To me the only reason to get a console over a PC (other than $) is convenience. And convenience pretty much loses altogether when it comes coupled with lower-end performance and bottle-necked features.

The benefit of consoles is dedicated hardware (cheaper for what you want), the same hardware (massively easier to develop for, instead of everyone's wacky custom built PC), end user ease of installation, custom imput devices (hate to tell ya'll but keyboards suck), and of course, exclusivity from your competitors.

The benefit of PCs is extreme customization and mice (something a thumbstick can't really replace).

Truth be told, I'm on the console's side here, despite not having bought or used a console game in over half a decade. Hardware freezes are good things, as developers spent less time fixing bugs with Joe's obscure video card and more time developing the game itself. There's also an upper limit on graphical capability, and while developers will still be wasting time trying to squeeze out slightly better pictures, it's not as bad as PC games. Oh, and did I mention I hate keyboards? 'Cause I do, as they require more (and more awkward) hand movement to reach different buttons.

From a user's perspective, I can see the appeal of PCs. From a developers perspective, fuck PCs.

With a decent 1080p (maybe even 720p) tv, you may not need to buy a dedicated computer monitor right away. Most tv's have hdmi and pc inputs, some even have dvi. And any modern graphics card is likely to have at least 1 hdmi out.
