Want a related true story I heard from my old psychology prof?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lesson learned: Don't throw valuable objects that may break.

Our water company added a digit to our bill for several months. Utilities can be kooky like that.

Generally they realize that looking at your previous records that something is wrong and they made a mistake somewhere. Or just a formatting error in the printout.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

Hehehe, if it makes you feel better, it's exactly the same case in Russia--in Moscow, really!  One day I spent a full couple of hours trying (and failing) to translate when we were negotiating for train tickets!

That makes it even more infuriating.
I expect basic English skills to be part of the job description.

That's relatively mild, but I understand your frustration... Helsinki is a beautiful city as a whole, but it's tainted with idiots who don't understand what "keeping the city clean" means. Young ones, mature ones, sober or drunk... so many people leaving their trash or feces on the streets. Ugly sprayed tags all around (no, i've got nothing against actual murals, but these stains just anger me) and rowdy groups making excessive noise. Drunkards, idiots, barbarians - that's what the visitors will see...

Yeah, Polish cities have sprayer problems too.
They could be quite pretty, if not for that and the rotting buildings you see every now and then.

Wait, feces? Really? What? Why!?

Well, it's not nearly as common as public urination - unless we're talking about dog feces of course. Regardless of which waste product we're talking about, it's one of those thing people realize when drunk - relieving themselves in the streets or in parks is an awesome idea. Paying to get into a public restroom is typically beyond their abilities.

You have to pay to get into public restrooms there? That's kind of sad in its own way.
