I rage whenever I see a improperly used Tilde. It is for showing in a mathematical sentence something is about equal to something else.

Actually, if you were familiar with Japanese, they do, in fact, use it as a general punctuation, often replacing a dash or the vowel extender.
Former because a dash looks like the vowel extender and latter because Japanese girls thought it looked cute.
It then followed its way back to American Japanophiles, who, because English has little need for a vowel extender, simply put it at the end of sentences to look cute, or some-odd.
