Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Computer Management> Device Manager> Network Adapters. should be the only thing in that section unless you have a wireless NIC as well. The NIC is the thing you plug the cable into to connect to wired network.

could also check Control Panel> Network & Sharing Center to check to the connection in general.

I can't find any Network Adapter heading, but I did find a Ethernet Adapter.

Its called the Ethernet Controller.

There are no Drivers installed onto it, could that be the problem?

It has no name other than "Ethernet Controller" and when I click on Driver details it says something about drivers not being required. (I turned the computer off just too see if that would fix it.)

You'll need a driver no matter what the PC tells you.
I once also had often some internet related problems and they fixed themselves when I reinstalled the driver.

What kind of ethernet device do you have? Google that with "driver" and then you should find it. I think.

So I guess I'll download this, use a memory stick, put it on the new one, find the driver I need, download it, use the memory stick to take it from the old one to the new one and then I smash something hopefully not valuable.

Its a Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (PHY: Realtek RTL8211/8212)   PCI, and found this and the website scares me.

Well, off to go download shit I don't trust for a second.
