I think the distinction lies on whether it's a picture or not.

Personally, I don't like the term 'emoji' enough that I just call them both emoticons.

Half of these so-called emoji look creepy as shit too. It's just the mobile market trying to rebrand shit, and succeeding apparently. Emoticon is awkward to say, so I never said it. I used the MMO parlance "emote." I'll probably keep using it. I'm kinda curious actually as to the etymology of the word, but the idea of Googling for that information makes me want to chew my hands off at the wrists.
