Rarg, that list makes me rage. While many of the points are vaild both:
Quote
He characterizes prostitution as a “legitimate” “job” “choice” or defends men who purchase prostitutes.
He watches pornography in which women are depicted.
Are bullshit.
Hell, this list says almost all women, and many feminists are rape-supporters.

Actually, those two are not exactly bullshit. Given current culture, a woman prostitute or porn actress is not really in a legitimate job. I don't think that either of those is necessarily a profession that plays into rape culture, but between the social stigma attached to either of them in public (ensuring that people aren't apt to give a shit about what happens to you, at best, and ensuring they will actively despise you at worst), the objectification of women that already exists in society (which both these professions back up by essentially allowing people to buy women as sex objects), and the obnoxiously exploitative environment (ensuring that once you find yourself working in that world, you never get out), it's just not realistic to insist that it isn't, in most cases, rape through economic pressure instead of physical violence.

I don't have a problem with either of them as inherent concepts (a person, I figure, owns their body and should be allowed to do what they want with it, provided the decision is an educated one), but as a society we've fucked them up beyond realistic hope of repair for the foreseeable future. Being allowed to sell your body is one thing, but being coerced into it is another, and by a wide margin, most women in either of these situations are being coerced.

EDIT: Male prostitution or participation in porn, I'm not so sure of. It may well be just as exploitative, but in the case of porn at least, I get the feeling the men involved generally have a lot more opportunity to get out, although I also suspect that in prostitution, there's a much larger social stigma attached for men. Just realized I specified "woman" up there and never explained why, so thought I should edit in this to make clear that I'm not saying, "Only women are victimized ever"

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

That artical makes me rage.

It gave me the same effect of listening to the F.A.T.A.L theme song and smashing my head against a wall repeatedly.

I find it comical that so much feminist writing actually makes people respect women less.

As for me, it makes me sad.

By listing a set of normal innocent behaviors common to pretty much all humans to some extent (in addition to a few bad or somewhat questionable behaviors), she is implicitly blaming all humans including the victims. Rubbing it in their face, saying "Guess what? It really is your fault." She is victimizing them again, and doing it intentionally.

You need to check your privilege, friendo.  You really, really need to.

The part I rage about is where the author says it is impossible to apply any of those standards to women.

It's impossible to apply them in the same way, because they do not enjoy male privilege.  You need to understand that there is a meaningful power differential here, pervasive in the extreme, and that no matter how bad this article makes you feel it's important to understand.

On the other hand, most third-wave feminists also understand that men are fucked over by the "patriarchy" in their own way, so you are not being blamed, generally, as individuals.  You are being asked, firmly, to reconsider your positions.

And, for everyone here who has been complaining about tone, I really want you to read this article:

This one.  It's short and relevant.

So go read it, please.

Not all men automatically enjoy male privileges, either.
Aside from the ones granted by law...

Can you clarify/expound/whatever?  I'm still quite sick, and am having trouble understanding you.

I think it would be easier, if you could link me some sort of list of typical 'male privileges'.
There has to be something like this lying around on the internet.
That would help 'us' to see more than just the obvious ones.

Because otherwise it's like promting somebody to tell you about the characteristics of his culture.
That person would have troubles, since he is living it unconsciously and it's only natural to him.

My point may have been.. (I'm not quite sure anymore, what I wanted to say in the first place)
...that men, who do not fall under the stereotypical definition of their gender, probably don't enjoy the male privileges you speak of.

That is very true. I don't think it was the authors intent, but it felt like she was... sniping, I guess the word would be. She wasn't being overly critical, but the way she would sweep on after a criticism changed the feel of it, sort of like 'if she's trying to speed over that then it has to be because she wanted to make it into a cheap shot'. She obviously didn't, but the idea just nags at me. On the whole though, it is very well done and does a good job of pointing out the reinforcements we provide just by being passive or by not examining the back trail of things.
