I don't know how old you are, but you may not get away from being guarded for a while. I can empathize because I often felt, by the places my parents chose to live, cut off from the rest of the world. Even after I got into a more people and opportunity-filled environment, I eventually had every summer, and every Christmas and New Year spoken for by family until I was 18.

The trick then, is surviving with your self-esteem and happiness intact until things can change.

Oh, and don't let the resentment build inside. Especially this. It can stay deep and harden your heart and mind.

I never really had friends, let alone friends at my house, so I sympathize greatly.

I just totaled up all the bills I've paid for a procedure I had done recently.....and it appears I've eaten the entire cost of this thing myself.

I fucking hate insurance so much. I hate money in general but I hate keeping track of money the worst, and I feel like insurance is some fucking game where if you don't watch in intensely and obsess over your bills, you end up getting bilked out of it. I've gotten like 5 bills for this thing, two of which said THIS IS NOT A BILL, simply outlining the financial situation vis-a-vis my account. And yet, months later, I end up on the hook for the rest of the amount of somehow.

Time to make some hate calls and put some secretaries to work calling up my accounts. Because the procedure ended up being $1700, and damn me if that isn't the exact amount all this has totaled up to.

I grew up extremely isolated, too.  Not by distance so much... but I grew up in a small town where I just didn't fit in.  Bullied and alone for about 7 years, before I met some people who treated me with any respect.  And then we moved :[... but it was for the better.

Oh, and don't let the resentment build inside. Especially this. It can stay deep and harden your heart and mind.

Yeah... 15 years later, I still struggle with this.  That self-perception of being rejected and alone is really difficult to shake after internalizing it for so long, even after it's no longer true at all.

@nenjin

"Oh, it's just a clerical error, we're sorry. We cancelled your coverage due to nonpayment of premiums, but it turns out somebody with the same name but an entirely different plan was the one failing to make payments, and due to a glitch in the system, you continued to be billed even after cancellation. Now, unfortunately, this cancellation was officially carried out and legally binding, so you weren't covered at the time of the operation and we can't be held legally responsible for the cost, but we'd be happy to reinstate your coverage in the future for a very small fee and premium increase."

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The civil case that would come from that would probably be pretty hilarious, since I'd wager good money (if I had any) that every instance of "legally" in that blurb would be a lie :P

HOLD IT! *BCHHHWWWW SOUND EFFECT*

I have not breached terms of contract and this cancellation was not mutually binding. Therefore how can it be called legal? Why should a mistake you have made cost me money?

"Well, if you see here, a few dozen pages into the contract, you've agreed to waive any rights to hold us responsible for any errors or unintended damages that may result from the use of our services, which are provided as-is. Though this technical glitch is certainly regrettable, it clearly falls under the purview of this disclaimer, and we are therefore not responsible for reimbursing you for the problem. As a matter of fact, as you can see on the following page, you bear the responsibility for contacting us in the event that an error occurs, such as an erroneous charge, so that we can correct the issue and prevent it from occurring in the future. Now, I can see that you're upset, so I'll talk to my supervisor and see if I can get the reactivation fee waived in this instance. There's nothing we can do about the premium increase, unfortunately, since that's just an adjustment made by our official policies for inconsistently maintained accounts, but I'll do my best to help you out here."

Yeah, a big thing with insurance is bugging the insurance companies over and over and over until they pay up (as much as they ever will).

Basically this is what happens when you let an industry that's supposed to be about spreading large, individual costs out among a large population try to make a profit. "What if we still took their money, but didn't pay for anything?" It's the most ass-backwards possible incentive system, short of a clause requiring the insurance companies to be written into their clients' wills.

One of my college professors decided that instead of handing in homework via the online submission tool on our website, we would use the school forums, which can only be accessed by students and teachers. Every class has their own little sub-forum that the teacher can freely toy around with.

They can create tons of new sub-forums or what-have-you, and can act as moderators for their own section.

This is great, as it gives students a better opportunity to freely talk and discuss class material. Except the forum itself is quite poor. My biggest issue right now is that you cannot edit your posts. And I accidentally hit submit for an assignment that wasn't even half finished.

God, I hate teachers that have their own unique special-snowflake ways of turning things in. My Spanish teacher once created a wiki for an essay at the beginning of the year. All it accomplished was to make the task of editing eachother's papers a difficult, contracted nightmare. And then several classmates didn't get credit for the editing stage of the assignment because of the chaos associated with multiple people trying to edit a single Wiki page at once. What was ever wrong with turning in an essay by, y'know, typing and then handing in an essay?
