If that number is more-or-less accurate, your grandpa needs a hobby.
It might be a bit low, actually. He played something like 25,000 games on that computer, with ~15 losses. Most of those losses were me, too.

Your grandpa seems like he'd fit in on this forum pretty well.

Also Kaijyuu, it seems like solitaire is his hobby. c:

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

9x9x9 cube solve. 12 minutes and 4 seconds at 10x time acceleration (ish)
And he broke the thing halfway through.

7x7x7 solve in just under four minutes. This one broke partway through as well.
Try solving a 1000x1000x1000 cube.
Note to self: Cubes are not an effective encryption scheme.

10003 took a day. You can store the same information on one side of the cube and make it a 1000003 one, which will be far harder to break.

Would be a good basis for an already honor system, like encrypted IRC messages.

Like beating Freecell? :P

If he has the same passion for it that the rubik's cube dude mentioned here does, then sure.

Maybe I'm being presumptuous but most people I know who play the same simple games over and over again are extremely bored.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Legit cube vids will have a bunch of clocks and people walking by on the sidewalk and water slowly dripping into a graduated cylinder and a cat covered in yogurt cleaning itself. Otherwise how do you know it's not just playing in reverse?

Not entirely sure if actually anger, but it's either this thread or the terrified one. Closer to exasperation, so... here. All I really have to say is nonexistent gods save me from the untrained who "know what they're doing".

I'm pretty sure I just came close to touching a live house wire, and even closer to having to call an ambulance for an electrocuted elderly person. They know what they're doing, though. Can't convince 'em to wait for someone who actually knows what the hell they're doing.

This person doesn't know about the Internet, right? That's just trouble waiting to happen.

... not knowing about the internet isn't going to get you electrocuted, nor should it be involving live household wiring. Probably. Hopefully. for the love of all that's holy if your grandparent is taking apart household wiring to install the internet stop them. Unless they're actually a certified electrician/etc. Maybe then, too.

No, there's issues with the breaker box and/or wiring in this house at th'mo, and grandfather got it in his head it was a good idea to remove a (Presumably! No one who would actually know was here.) dead/useless wire leading into said box. Which he did, and shanghaied me into helping (or rather, I got out and helped because if he had done it alone he might not have survived :-\). Wire's out, but it turns out the thing we were yanking out was apparently attached to the box the whole time, when he had thought it wasn't and, well. May have just lucked out a bit. I don't know. I know not wiring et al.

I was saying if he's a brave tinkerer without technical expertise maybe surfing the net isn't such a great plan :P

So, did you guys turn off all the breakers in the breaker box first? I don't know how you're supposed to stay safe when dealing with wires leading into the box from the street.

I know that the linked video was playing in reverse because it is quite impossible to electronically solve a 50x50x50 cube in the manner displayed in the video without taking almost forever, also the fact that an average scrambled 50x50x50 cube would take over 6000 moves to complete even with the optimal solution (as opposed to the ~300 moves shown in the video).
